About this trip...

Discover the scenic beauty of Portugal and Spain on two wheels with this relaxed, sociable cycling tour, designed exclusively for solo travellers. Based in the laid-back beach resort of Monte Gordo, this week-long adventure takes you through charming coastal towns, quiet country lanes, and wildlife-rich nature reserves — all with the guidance of expert local leaders and in the company of like-minded solo cyclists. With five fully guided rides, you’ll explore the unspoilt Algarve countryside and cross the Guadiana River by ferry to cycle through southern Spain. Highlights include the atmospheric salt pans and bird sanctuaries near Ayamonte, the hilltop town of Castro Marim, and the coastal gems of Tavira, Cacela Velha, and Isla Cristina. Each route offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural charm, with plenty of café stops and time to explore. Non-cycling days give you the freedom to unwind by the sea or enjoy the hotel's facilities at your own pace. Whether you’re an experienced rider or just enjoy gentle exploration, this easy-to-moderate tour offers the perfect balance of activity, scenery and connection — all with your own room and no single supplements guaranteed.

Well worked out set of rides

Wonderful leaders in Scott and Jose. A well worked out set of rides providing interest and authenticity. The hotel was fine and the group was cohesive, probably as Scott provided a constant stream of interest being an abundance of photos of the days rides and Jose's local knowledge. Good trip indeed.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fit and well enough to take part in your chosen activity holiday. If you are unsure as to whether the cycling is within your capabilities, please contact the office to discuss this matter, thus making sure you appreciate the terrain that you will be walking. Please appreciate the route and content of the holiday may change at the time and at the discretion of the guide/organiser, should conditions require. Solo’s Holidays Ltd cannot be held responsible for personal injury, accident or damage to property whilst on these cycling routes other than incidents arising out of the company’s negligence. The guide has the right to refuse to guide a bike ride with anyone not properly attired.
What to Wear
It is of paramount importance that you have the correct attire when cycling for enjoyment, comfort and safety. It is essential to wear padded cycling shorts/trousers that are comfortable. We strongly recommend wearing a suitable cycling helmet on your tour. We recommend bringing your own helmet for comfort and safety however, helmets will be available with the bike hire. We also highly recommend taking and wearing cycling/biking short or long gloves. You will also need to bring a small adapted rucksack suitable for bike riding to keep all your essentials such a food, drink, first-aid kit, clothing etc Whilst we would hope for good weather during your holiday, it is of course impossible to guarantee this. We would therefore recommend you travel with clothing suitable for all conditions, and suggest you use the following checklist as a guideline of what to take:
  • Cycling shorts/trousers with padded seat – to wear under your cycling clothes – definitely worth investing in a pair or two if you haven’t any already.
  • Shorts to go on top of cycling shorts. For cooler climates or early/late in the season, you may want to consider packing three-quarter length shorts or tights/leggings.
  • Waterproofs – light-weight fold-able jacket and trousers to fit in your small rucksack
  • Comfortable trainers/footwear for cycling
  • Cycling jersey or similar (insulated for warmth for cooler climates or early/late in the season)
  • Base layer/breathable tops
  • Mid layer (Fleece)
  • Helmet - essential (we recommend to take your own for comfort and safety)
  • Gloves (short or long finger)
  • Lightweight drinking bottle
  • Sunglasses – bright sunlight can impair your vision when riding, we recommend to bring a pair that fit comfortable and not fall off as you ride.
  • Basic first-aid kit - It’s useful to have a basic first-aid kit in your small rucksack as you cycle. Cuts or scrapes can occasionally happen so make sure it includes a set of plasters, together with painkillers, bandages and any essential medication you may need.
  • Sunscreen and lip-balm
  • Casual clothes and comfortable shoes for when not cycling
In Portugal, wearing a helmet is not mandatory for regular bikes but is required for electric bikes. If you decide to ride without a helmet, the supplier will not be able to accept liability for any injuries that may occur. Helmets are provided as part of the tour and strongly encourage the use - this is not only for personal safety but also to contribute to the overall well-being of the group and to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone. Additionally, insurance companies may have limitations in coverage if clients choose not to wear helmets.

As a precaution, if you choose not to wear a helmet during the tour, you will be asked to sign a responsibility waiver provided by the tour leader.

Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover transfer drivers, and hotel staff of €20.00 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions.

For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % add on.
Passport, Visa & Entry Requirements
Passport If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements.Your passport must be:
  • issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
Visa You can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies if you travel as a tourist, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events, or for short-term studies or training. If travelling to Spain and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

From the 12th October 2025 the EU is introducing a new European Entry System (EES) that will be phased in and fully operational by the 10th April 2026. Non-EU nationals including British passport holders will now be required to complete biometric checks on arrival and exit to Schengen countries, which will include facial recognition and fingerprints. There is no cost for this, and no action needs to be taken prior to departure.
Health Requirements
Compulsory Vaccinations: None

All clients are responsible for acquainting themselves with up to date health information of the countries being visited and where necessary take the required precautions. We recommend that you check with your doctor prior to departure as this information can change. You can also visit the travel health website for more information; NaTHNaC - Portugal
