About this trip...

This 10-day guided group tour through Atlantic Canada offers a rich blend of scenic beauty during the fall, cultural heritage, and coastal charm. Beginning in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, you and your fellow solo travellers will journey through the forested landscapes of Cape Breton to explore the iconic Cabot Trail and Cape Breton Highlands, following by a visit to the Alexander Graham Bell Museum. The adventure continues to Prince Edward Island with visits to Charlottetown and the Green Gables Heritage Site, before crossing the Confederation Bridge to New Bruswick for tidal explorations at Hopewell Rocks and a whale-watching excursion in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea. Along the way, you will enjoy culinary delights, including a traditional lobster dinner, and immersive cultural experiences such as beer and winery tastings. The tour concludes in Nova Scotia with visits to historic Lunenburg, Peggy's Cove, vibrant Halifax and the Canadian Museum of Immigartion at Pier 21.

Welcome to Canada! On arrival into Halifax, we transfer to our hotel in Darmouth and check-in. This evening, we meet our fellow Solos travellers for a welcome drink and informal meeting before enjoying a delicious meal together.

Day Two: Dartmouth to Sydney, Nova Scotia

This morning, we travel across Nova Scotia, where we'll be treated to some of the most beautiful, forested lands of the eastern seaboard. Eventually, we enter Cape Breton Island via the Canso Causeway and follow the shores of the Bras d'Or Lake to the delightful resort community of Baddeck. Here we visit the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, dedicated to the life and works of Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone. Then it's off too the colonial city of Sydney for our two-night stay.

Day Three: Cabot Trail & Cape Breton Highlands

Today is a scenic highlight, as the journey takes us along one of the most stunningly picturesque drives in North America. The Cabot Trail winds around the rocky splendour of Cape Breton's southern shore, ascending to the incredible plateaus of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The route curves around sea swept headlands, clinging to the edge of cliffs that drop up to 300 meters to the sea, and threads dark river gorges amid ancient hills. Lookouts offer unforgettable vistas of Cape Breton's rugged coastline, creating perfect photo opportunities. Numerous trails of varying difficulty are available for our enjoyment today so be sure to bring your camera! A ride on Atlantic Canada's only gondola will take us to the summit of Cape Smokey Mountain, where we will find expansive views of the Cape Breton Highland National Park, Atlantic Ocean and Ingonish.

Day Four: Sydney, NS - Charlottetown, PEI

This morning, we pass through tranquil countryside and small communities, such as Antigonish or New Glasgow, who continue to celebrate Nova Scotia's Scottish, Indian and Acadian heritage. From Caribou, NS, we take the short ferry ride across the Northumberland Strait to Wood Islands on Prince Edward Island (PEI). Our route reveals the diversity of the Maritimes landscape, leaving behind the rugged beauty of Cape Breton and arriving in agricultural and pastoral Prince Edward Island, the smallest Province and Birthplace of Canadian Confederation. We make our way to the Provincial Captal of Charlottetown, where a city tour with a local guide shows the effortless mix of storybook-elegant island life with the amenities of a mid-sized modern city. This evening, we enjoy a delicious lobster dinner with our fellow travellers.

Day Five: PEI - Moncton

Day Five: PEI - Moncton

This morning, we meet with an Interpretive Guide while taking in the iconic red cliffs, white beaches, gently sloping sand dunes and green fields pf Prince Edward Island National Park. We visit Green Gables Heritage Site, the enchanting inspiration of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic Anne of Green Gable's books. Afterwards, our coach traverses the nearly 13km long Confederation Bridge, an engineering marvel stretching across the waters of the Northumberland Strait and connecting PEI with the Province of New Brunswick. Stopping off in Shediac, the self-proclaimed 'Lobster Capital of the World', we enjoy this charming seaside village with large lobster sculpture. Finally we have a visit to a local winery for a tasting before checking in to our hotel in Moncton.

Day Six: Fundy Coast - Saint John

Today on the journey to the seaport of Saint John, a stop at Hopewell Rocks Ocean Tidal Exploration Site serves as a reminder of the power of the ocean, given time and opportunity. The famous, giant four-story high 'flowerpot' rock formations have been carved out from the soft conglomerate cliffs by the action of the Fundy tides, creating incredible pillared natural sculptures. At low tide, we can walk on the ocean floor around the base of the walks. We continue through Funday National Park and Fund Trail Provincial Park, famous for ther rugged shoreline, heavily wooded hills and valleys, forming one of the most pristine and unspoilt coastlines in Eastern North America. Upon arrival, a brief tour of Saint Jon with local guide reveals how mariners from around the world have left their impression on this seafaring city.

Day Seven: St Andrews-by the Sea & Bay of Fundy

Day Seven: St Andrews-by the Sea & Bay of Fundy

Following breakfast, we will travel a short distance to the famous summer resort town, St Andrews-by-the-Sea, who's eighteenth century buildings form a beacon of Maritimes architectural grace. Weather permitting, we board a nimble, open deck cruiser and venture out into the ocean in search of whales that come to this area to feed and socialize. Returning to Saint John in the afternoon for a Beer Tour, giving you a close-up look at the various brewhouses of the city, whlie uncovering the aromatic tastes and smells.

Day Eight: Lunenburg - Western Shore, NS

Day Eight: Lunenburg - Western Shore, NS

The day starts with a fabulous ferry ride across the cobalt waters of the Bay of Fundy. Arriving in Digby, Nova Scotia, a picture-postcard fishing port, home to the largest scallop fishing fleet in the world. The area is dotted with historic sites and magnificent viewpoints. Later, we pass through the forested heart of Nova Scotia, stopping at Kejimkujik National Park, which preserves both the natural landscapes as well as historic sites of the Native Micmac people. Finally, we stop in historic Lunenburg, one of Canada's great fishing ports and renowned as the home of the Schooner Bluenose, Canada's most famous ship - depicted on the ten cent coin. A replica of the ship, Bluenose II, can sometimes be seen docked in front of the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. During a walking tour, we see the colourful waterside homes and buildings, illustrating why this village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Finally, we pass the village of Mahone Bay, famous for the image of it's three side-by-side Churches on our way to Western Shore for the night.

Day Nine: Peggy's Cove - Halifax

Day Nine: Peggy's Cove - Halifax

After breakfast, we follow a portion of the scenic Lighthouse Route that meanders along the rugged Atlantic coastline, dotted with small fishing villages and beaches. We stop at Peggy's Cove, a quaint fishing village with a celebrated landmark lighthouse, characteristic of the communities that line the Atlantic Coast. The postcard-perfect seaside village is also renowned for for the dramatic granite shoreline, its weatherworn wharves and rustic dwellings, and its lighthouse point, which offers a sweeping view of the sea. Later, we reach Nova Scotia's Capital of Halifax. Halifax is located on one of the world's largest natural harbours and has a proud maritime heritage. We meet a local guide for a fascinating tour of Halifax. Being the major Atlantic seaport for Canada, the hisorical importance of this city astride one of the world's best natural harbours becomes abundantly clear. A visit to the Citadel, a hill-top fortress overlooking the city with its colonial battlements, is a highlight of the tour. Other sights include the Public Gardens, and the waterfront area with the restored Historic Properties. We then enjoy a guided tour of The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, a natural historic site at the Halifax Seaport and Canada's last standing ocean immigration terminal before checking in to our hotel and joining our fellow travellers for a farewell dinner.

Transfer Time
Transfer time from Halifax Stanfield International Airport to the Sandman Signature Dartmouth is approximately 25mins. 
Transfer time from the Cambridge Suites Halifax to Halifax Standfield International Airport is approximately 35mins.
Passport & Visa Information
Full 10-year passport is required, valid for 6 months beyond the intended length of stay. Visitors travelling to Canada by air are now expected to get an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) to enter Canada. If you’re visiting Canada you’ll need an eTA to board your flight unless you’re otherwise exempted (for example, if you have a valid Canadian visa or a permanent resident card). 
 
If you have British-Canadian dual nationality you won’t be able to apply for an eTA and you’ll need to present a valid Canadian passport to board your flight to Canada. For more information about the eTA system, and to apply online, visit the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) website. Approx: $7 CAD It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct visa, a valid passport and any other travel documents for your holiday.

Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. To give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. The Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection at the beginning of your holiday to cover drivers, guides, porters and hotel staff of approximately CAD 70.00 . Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip.

Dress Code
Dressing in layers is recommended. Casual evening wear is recommended and comfortable shoes for sightseeing. Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and mosquito repellent can be very useful during your stay.
Important Information
A reasonable level of fitness/mobility is required as we include plenty of sightseeing and travelling some long distances, sometimes with early starts. Please note that the order of the itinerary may be subject to change should local conditions necessitate.
