We arrive in Quito this morning and transfer to our comfortable hotel, where we spend the day relaxing and acclimatising to the altitude. Our Solos Tour Leader will be on hand from the moment we arrive, ensuring everything runs smoothly and helping us settle in. Our rooms will be available on arrival.

Quito is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in South America and was the first to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its cobbled streets and grand plazas offer the perfect introduction to Ecuador’s rich history and culture.

This evening, we meet our local trip leader, who will talk us through the itinerary in detail and answer any questions. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner and get to know our fellow travellers.

We enjoy a relaxed start to our day with a delicious breakfast. We may choose to explore the city at our own pace, discovering local cafés, shops, or nearby attractions. Whether you prefer a quiet morning or a bit of adventure, the time is ours to enjoy as we wish.

We then leave Quito and visit the equator line, where we can stand on both sides of the hemisphere and have some fun trying to balance an egg on a nail at the Intiñan Museum.

We move on to explore the pristine Mindo Cloud Forest, filled with a wide variety of plants and animal life, a perfect introduction to the diversity of Ecuador. Mindo and its surrounding cloud forest are a birdwatcher's paradise, especially for hummingbirds.

We check-in to our hotel.

Day Four: Mindo Cloud Forest

Day Four: Mindo Cloud Forest

This morning, we wake up to a lovely breakfast followed by a leisurely hike. Thrill seekers may wish to go whitewater rafting or "tubing", or try a canopy zip line (sailing along one of 13 zip lines over the beautiful canopy of the Mindo Cloud Forest.)

One of the highlights today is a visit to the butterfly nursery, where we watch gargantuan butterflies emerging from their jewel-like cocoons.

In the afternoon, we learn more about cocoa, from harvesting the seed to the final product, and enjoy a delicious brownie or cup of real hot cocoa.

Today, we travel along the Pan-American Highway to the indigenous town of Otavalo. In the afternoon, we drive to Cotacachi, famous for its impressive leather goods. Enjoy some free time and explore the shops or simply relax in the main plaza where we can find one of the best coffees in Ecuador.

Later we arrive at the beautiful, historical hacienda of Pinsaquí where we will stay overnight. Enjoy a typical Andean cocktail whilst discovering more about its history.

We then head to the Sacha Warmikuna Women’s Project (women from the mountain) developed to help the women support their families by providing them with an alternative source of income. We share some precious time with this local community by taking part in the preparation of “Aji”, a local spicy salsa which is part of their identity and help prepare a tasty traditional lunch made using fresh products harvested from the surrounding organic fields.

Essential Information

Ecuador entry requirements
All passengers are required to complete a Health Declaration Form with their itinerary and local contact details before checking in for the flight.

Passport validity

Both visitors and residents must have a minimum of 6 months’ validity on their passport from the date of entry. This is a strict legal requirement from the Ecuadorean government. If your passport does not meet this requirement, you will be denied entry to Ecuador. Check with your travel provider to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements.

Visas

If you are a British passport holder visiting Ecuador for up to 90 days in any 12 month period, you do not need a visa.   Further information can be found at Entry requirements - Ecuador travel advice - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
Transfer time
Transfer time from Quito Airport to Hotel in Quito is about an hour.
Currency
The US Dollar is used in Ecuador
Dress code
During the day when sightseeing, we recommend casual, lightweight cotton clothing, shorts or comfortable trousers. We recommend to bring at least 2 sets of clothes that dry quickly (jeans not recommended). You will find that smart casual wear is acceptable, even in the best hotels during the evening. We would recommend a lightweight raincoat and an umbrella or hat for protection against rain or sun. Comfortable walking shoes are a “must” for sightseeing and for hiking trails and stairs (preferably with a thick tread). Please take a zip-lock plastic bags for personal belongings protection in case of rain, small day pack or fanny pack for hikes, sweater or light jacket, sunglasses and swimwear.
Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover guides, transfer drivers, and hotel staff. We recommend $ 10.00 per person per day for the guide and $ 5.00 per person per day for driver. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % to add on.
Fitness
It is important to be fully mobile and be able to snorkel if you wish to discover the amazing marine life on the Galapagos Islands. You do have the option to stay on board the boat if you wish to do so.
