Day Three: Kariega Game Reserve

This morning promises an unforgettable adventure as we venture into the heart of Kariega Game Reserve. Spanning 1,200 hectares of untouched African wilderness and flanked by two thriving rivers, the reserve teems with natural beauty and wildlife. At first light, we join our expert ranger-guide and set off on an exhilarating safari drive. Keep your eyes peeled as we search for Africa’s legendary Big Five: elephant, lion, rhino, leopard, and buffalo while our ranger informs us about the flora and fauna of the bush and the way of life of the various animals.

We return to the lodge for breakfast and the rest of the day is at leisure until afternoon tea is served. After enjoying tea and home-baked treats at the lodge, we head back out with our ranger for our late afternoon safari. Following a traditional sundowner at a scenic location, the safari drive continues into dusk. With the careful use of a spotlight, our ranger will try and locate the elusive nocturnal animals.

Day Four: Kariega Game Reserve & Tsitsikamma Forest

Rise and shine for another morning in the African wilderness and get ready for our final safari adventure. We depart Kariega after breakfast and head toward the scenic Garden Route, passing through Jeffrey’s Bay — a renowned surfer’s haven known for its towering waves. Our journey continues into the lush Tsitsikamma Forest, named from the Khoi language, meaning 'the place of much water'. This ancient forest is home to towering yellowwood trees that are more than 800 years old and reach heights of over 35 meters. It has earned its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Impressive bridges span the deep river-carved gorges, including the iconic Bloukrans Bridge, with its 272-metre arch — one of the highest commercial bungee jumping sites in the world, where thrill-seekers leap over 200 metres into the valley below.

Day Five: Tsitsikamma National Park & Knysna

We begin the day with a visit to Tsitsikamma National Park, which stretches from the Outeniqua Mountains to the Indian Ocean, covering coastal plateaus and dense indigenous forest. A short walk from the parking area leads through lush forest to a suspension bridge overlooking the dramatic Storms River Mouth. From here, we continue to Plettenberg Bay—often called 'Millionaire’s Paradise'—renowned for its mild climate, scenic lagoon, river mouth, and three inviting beaches. Historically, elephants roamed this region, and some believe a few may still survive in the forests between Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. On arrival in Knysna, a charming town set on a tranquil lagoon, we check-in to our hotel. The rest of the day is ours to enjoy at leisure.

Day Seven: Oudtshoorn Ostrich Farm

We continue our journey to Wilderness - a charming seaside town known for its endless white beaches and sweeping views of the Outeniqua Mountains. From here, our route turns inland toward George - the largest city in the Garden Route region. The road then ascends the Outeniqua Mountains via a 12-kilometer mountain pass, originally built by Italian prisoners of war during World War II.

We arrive in Oudtshoorn, the heart of the Little Karoo and famously known as the Ostrich Capital of the World. Here, we visit the Safari Ostrich Farm for a guided tour. We’ll gain insight into the fascinating world of these unique birds. We learn about every stage of ostrich farming—from breeding and incubation to rearing—and discover what makes ostriches such remarkable creatures.

Day Eight: Cango Caves & Cape Winelands

Day Eight: Cango Caves & Cape Winelands

At the break of dawn, we can embark on an optional Meerkat safari or Elephant Feeding Experience. We then begin our day with a visit to the Cango Caves, located in the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains. This impressive cave system stretches over 5km, though only 1.2km is accessible to visitors. Highlights include the vast Great Hall, measuring over 107 meters wide and 16 meters high, adorned with dramatic stalagmites and stalactites. Afterwards, we head to Mossel Bay, a town rich in history dating back to 1488 when Portuguese explorer Bartholomeu Dias became the first European to set foot on South African soil. Along the way, we drive through the towns of Riversdale, Heidelberg, and Swellendam, one of South Africa’s oldest settlements, founded in 1747. Passing through Caledon, we ascend Sir Lowry’s Pass for breathtaking views over False Bay and the Cape of Good Hope.

From there, we make our way to the beautiful Cape Winelands. They consist of several wine growing regions producing a large variety of wines, using various methods of viticulture. These regions include Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. We continue to Stellenbosch—South Africa’s second oldest town and now a vibrant university city. Known for its beautifully preserved Cape Dutch architecture, especially around Dorp Street, Stellenbosch also boasts the Village Museum, showcasing local life from the 16th to 18th centuries. Surrounded by renowned vineyards, it’s the heart of the Cape Winelands.

Our final stop is Franschhoek, the 'French Corner', settled in 1688 by French Huguenots fleeing religious persecution. The town retains a distinct French charm, nestled among mountains and home to top-tier restaurants and over 20 wine estates. Tonight we stay near the town of Paarl which derives its name from huge granite domes that shimmer in the sunlight like pearls. The main street is lined with shady oak trees and historical buildings, some dating back to the 18th century. The Afrikaans language monument is a landmark and offers beautiful panoramic views into the winelands.

This morning we'll enjoy a memorable ride on the Franschhoek Wine Tram - an ideal way to explore the scenic Franschhoek Valley and its celebrated wine estates. The hop-on, hop-off tram and tram-bus allow us to experience wine tastings, cellar tours, and peaceful walks through picturesque vineyards at our own pace. We then continue our journey to Cape Town, affectionately known as the 'Mother City'. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and a dramatic backdrop of Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak, Lion’s Head, Signal Hill, and Table Bay, Cape Town is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

After checking in to our hotel, we take some time to unwind before heading out for a special dinner at GOLD Restaurant. Set in a stylishly converted warehouse, GOLD offers a vibrant pan-African dining experience. We enjoy an award-winning 14-dish tasting menu inspired by flavours and ingredients from across the continent, accompanied by live performances—including traditional singing, dancing, and the energizing rhythms of African djembe drumming.

Dress Code
The emphasis is on casual clothing throughout. Comfortable shoes or walking boots are recommended. Dressing in layers and waterproofs to allow for changes in the weather is recommended. Please bring some warm clothing for example a fleece and warm outer jacket for the evenings and early mornings.

On safari, it is advisable to wear long sleeves and trousers to provide protection against insect bites. On safari avoid clothes with very bright colours as this may irritate the animals, preferably wear clothes with brown, khaki or beige colours. Binoculars are also recommended. A cap or wide brimmed hat to protect from the sun and sunglasses are recommended.
Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. In order to give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. We suggest a group collection at the beginning of your holiday to cover drivers, guides, porters and hotel staff (including restaurant, kitchen and reception staff) of approximately 1000 ZAR.

Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of bar staff and housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate add on.
Important Information
Please note that the itinerary is subject to change based on local conditions. A reasonable level of fitness/mobility is required for sightseeing. There is a lot of travelling and some early starts.
