About this trip...

Nestled on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains, between the provinces of Granada and Almería, join us for a group walking holiday in a location famous for its whitewashed villages, Moorish heritage and breathtaking natural landscapes. The region stretches from the high mountain peaks of the Sierra Nevada to the Mediterranean foothills, offering a dramatic mix of rugged terrain, deep gorges, terraced hillsides, and lush valleys. We will find and walk along an abundance of streams, springs, and acequias (ancient irrigation channels), many of which were built during the Moorish period.

Hiking in La Alpujarra is one of the best ways to explore its wild beauty, Moorish heritage, and peaceful mountain villages. This region is crisscrossed with ancient footpaths, many originally used by traders, shepherds, or Berber settlers, and now perfect for walking.

Day One: Arrival in to Spain

Day Two: Discovering the water of La Alpujarra

Lanjaron is the entrance to the Alpujarra, a quiet and warm place known for its waters of great abundance and variety. Its natural environment and landscape allow hiking trails of great beauty and interest which we will start to discover today.

We leave the hotel and walk directly cross the old and beautiful neighbourhood of Barrio Hondillo, the historic quarter of Lanjarón. This neighborhood exemplifies traditional Alpujarran architecture, influenced by both Berber and Moorish styles. Its narrow, winding streets are adorned with whitewashed houses, creating a picturesque and timeless atmosphere. After a brief ascent, we will reach the channel network of acequias de Lanjaron. This intricate network of ancient irrigation channels have been vital to the region's agriculture and water management for centuries. Originating during the Moorish period, these channels exemplify sophisticated engineering techniques designed to distribute mountain water to terraced fields and orchards, enabling cultivation in the landscapes of the Alpujarras.

We also enjoy a visit and tasting at Lanjarón Cheese Factory which will include local drinks and different types of cheeses.

We will follow the small medieval footpaths that will take us through some of these small villages - some of the best examples of the traditional architecture of the Alpujarra, including the villages of Ferreirola, Busquistar and Atalbeitar. While walking, we will talk about the history of the Alpujarra, the characteristics of its urban planning and architecture, natural resources and traditions. Day Five: Granada & the Alhambra

Day Five: Granada & the Alhambra

We head to Granada today for a walking tour of this iconic and culturally rich city in Andalusia. Famous for the Alhambra Palace, which we also visit today, the city also has an old Moorish quarter, filled with a labyrinthine streets, whitewashed houses, and views of the Alhambra from the Mirador de San Nicolás. There is a big historical presence in Granada, as it is here the story of 1492—when Spain's Reconquista ended and the New World began—started right here. The imposing Cathedral of Granada was built on the ruins of a mosque, the Royal Chapel, where Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand are buried.

We will also visit the the Alhambra, which was first established as a military fortress in 889AD. It wasn’t until the 13th century that it became the magnificent palace complex we see today. The Alhambra is one of the most visited monuments in Spain, and for good reason. The stunning walled palace complex dates back largely to the 13th and 14th centuries, and is home to some of Europe's most beautiful examples of Islamic architecture. We admire the intricately carved stonework and complex geometric designs of the numerous courtyards, labyrinthine hallways and elegant gardens. We'll visit the main buildings and monuments of the Alhambra, including the Medina, the Alcazaba, the Generalife Gardens and the Palacios Nazaries: Mexuar, the Comares Palace and the iconic Court of the Lions.
  • Breakfast & dinner included

Day Six: Walking village to village in the Lecrin Valley

Day Six: Walking village to village in the Lecrin Valley

Today we start in the picturesque village of Melegis, nestled in the heart of the Lecrín Valley. Known for its rich history, stunning natural beauty, and tranquil atmosphere, Melegís offers a unique glimpse into Andalusian rural life. On this trail, we discover the diversity of the landscape and that the Lecrin Valley is a depression among mountains, which are relatively near to the coast, so it has a microclimate that allows the cultivation of orange and lemon trees.

During today's walk, we pass through the villages of the valley: Melegis, Chite, Murchas and Lecrin (Talara). The big churches that stand proud represent the new power, which settled in the area after the Christian conquest in the 15th century. We walk alongside different rivers (the Torrente, Durcal and Izbor rivers) that flow into the Béznar reservoir. The reservoir is an interesting place for fishing and watching different aquatic bird species. The walk will take us to an oil mill which we will visit and have a tasting session.

This evening we will gather and enjoy a flamenco show at the hotel.

Today's route begins from the hotel and celebrates the fisherman's route that would be taken from the coast to deliver the fish to the mountain villages. We begin by leaving the hotel and heading up a path to a viewpoint the overlooks the town, with the surrounding mountains making up the backdrop. We then descend towards Rules Dam following the streams and the valleys. The Dam plays a crucial role in regional water management, supporting both agricultural and potential energy needs. Following another trail, we head up again to another viewpoint before dropping down into the lush Rio Lanjaron valley with the towering cliffs above us. Our final asent will take us back to the castle town, completing a circular route showing the best of the area.

Essential Information

Transfer
From Malaga Airport to the hotel, it is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.
Important information
It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fit and well enough to take part in your chosen activity holiday. If you are unsure as to whether the walks are within your capabilities, please contact the office to discuss this matter, thus making sure you appreciate the terrain that you will be walking.  You will be walking across uneven ground in some areas and extreme care must be taken, especially if wet. If used to using a pole/stick, it is advisable to bring it. Please appreciate the route and content of the holiday may change at the time and at the discretion of the guide/organiser, should conditions require. Solo’s Holidays cannot be held responsible for personal injury, accident or damage to property whilst on these walks other than incidents arising out of the company’s negligence. The guide has the right to refuse to guide a walk with anyone not properly attired.
Dress code
It is of paramount importance that you have the correct footwear for this walking holiday. It is essential to wear walking boots that are comfortable and preferably lightweight, with some ankle support and a good grip. If you already have a pair of boots that you are happy walking in (including during hot/wet weather and on hard ground), then bring these along. However, if you are bringing new footwear, do make sure they are well broken in before you arrive. Experience has shown that wearing 2 pairs of woollen socks adds to comfort. Whilst we would hope for good weather during your holiday, it is of course impossible to guarantee this. We would therefore recommend you travel with clothing suitable for all conditions, and suggest you use the following checklist as a guideline of what to take:
  • Walking boots with good ankle support
  • Waterproofs – jacket and trousers
  • Walking poles – recommended as they provide good support for the knees, particularly on downhill sections of walks and when conditions are wet/slippery
  • Lightweight trousers and shorts with pockets
  • Shirts or t-shirts for walking in
  • Walking socks – several pairs
  • Lightweight fleece or jumper
  • Daysack/rucksack for walking
  • Lightweight drinking bottle to carry water whilst walking
  • Small first aid kit – plasters, insect repellant, etc
  • Good, high factor sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses
Gratuities

We suggest a Group Collection to cover transfer drivers, and hotel staff of €30 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions.

For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % add on.
