About this trip...
Get ready to be swept up in the rhythm, colour and soul of an island like no other. From the lively streets of Havana, where vintage cars glide past pastel façades and the sound of salsa spills from every corner, to the tobacco-growing heartland of Viñales, the cobblestone charm of Trinidad and the seaside elegance of Cienfuegos – this journey captures the very essence of Cuba.
Step into Hemingway’s world as we visit his favourite haunts, master the sensual art of Cuban salsa and soak up the island’s passion for music, history and life itself. Then it’s time to unwind in Jibacoa, where turquoise waters meet golden sands and the pace slows to a gentle Caribbean rhythm.

Day Three: Viñales: Valleys, Cigars and Country Life
Today, we leave Havana for the lush countryside of Viñales, where Cuba’s famous tobacco is grown. We visit a traditional farm and learn about the process of farming tobacco as well as some of the secrets of making an authentic Cuban cigar.
Afterwards we do as the locals do and experience a horseback ride through the stunning Viñales Valley, surrounded by dramatic limestone hills and small family farms. There is also an option to walk this route. We then head to a local farm where we enjoy an organic, home-cooked lunch, prepared with ingredients grown on the farm, served with spectacular views of the valley.
Next, we head to the terrace of Los Jasmines Hotel, where we’ll be treated to sweeping panoramic views of the stunning Viñales Valley. From this vantage point, the dramatic limestone outcrops, known as Mogotes, rise almost vertically from the valley floor, surrounded by a patchwork of fertile plantations still worked by oxen and dotted with traditional tobacco drying houses with steep palm-thatched roofs.
Our journey continues to the Mural de la Prehistoria, where a striking, brightly painted depiction of the history of evolution stretches across the side of a Mogote, blending art, culture, and nature in a truly unforgettable experience.
After a day of exploring, we head to the iconic Hotel Nacional, a landmark of Cuban history where world leaders like Sir Winston Churchill, Hollywood stars such as Marlon Brando, and music legends including Nat King Cole have all walked its halls. We would advise taking all essential medication with you, as supplies are not always readily available.
Cuba’s official currency for tourists is the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC). Cuba operates on a cash economy. Euros and USD are widely accepted, with change given in Cuban pesos, which should be enough to use for small tips and small purchases in local currency. Some government shops and hotels will only take a card payment so you may use your credit card and if it does not work your guide will be happy to offer assistance.
You will find most hotels will offer wi-fi, however it is typically strongest in the lobby and may not extend to your room, this applies to most resorts in Cuba.
You can access additional wi-fi via a NAUTA card, purchased locally, this will give you access to wi-fi in public areas. (approximate price, 1 hour 25 CUP (80p) or 5 hours 125 CUP (£4).

Food in Cuba
Cuban food is flavourful and comforting, rooted in a mix of Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences, with staples like rice, beans, plantains, pork, and yuca. However, due to long-standing economic challenges and supply limitations, food variety can sometimes be limited, especially outside major tourist areas. Certain ingredients like fresh dairy products, seafood, or imported items may not always be available, and menus can be simpler than expected. While travellers may not find a wide range of international cuisine, they can expect hearty home-style meals, fresh tropical fruits, and generous hospitality that reflect the island’s rich culture and resilience.
During this trip, we have made several reservations at restaurants for lunch and dinner to try and bring you the best of Cuban cuisine in traditional restaurants.
In Jibacoa, you will be staying on an all-inclusive basis, and all meals will be at the hotel.
Safety
Cuba is a safe destination and violence of any kind is rare, however opportunistic theft can be an issue therefore we recommend that you use the safe in your accommodation and make sure that you create your own PIN code for same. Keep a copy of your passport with you rather than the original and only your cash requirement for that day.
What to pack
We would recommend light, comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes for exploring as you will find many cobbled streets and areas of uneven ground.

- Sunscreen & insect repellent, essential for tropical sun and mosquitoes.
- Adapters & Chargers,Cuba uses Type A/B and Type C/F plugs.
- Snacks & special items, especially if you have dietary needs.

Among the most needed items in Cuba are basic medicines such as painkillers, cold medicines, antihistamines, and antidiarrheals. School supplies, personal and feminine hygiene products, as well as gently used second-hand clothing, especially for children, are also highly appreciated. These donations are always warmly received and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
