Day Two: Alnwick Castle & Gardens

After breakfast, we set out on a fascinating guided walk through the historic market town of Alnwick. Once the county town, Alnwick boasts a history spanning more than 1,500 years and is dominated by its mighty castle, seat of the Dukes of Northumberland—one of the most powerful baronial families in the North. The rest of the day is dedicated to exploring Alnwick Castle and Gardens. Home to the Percy family for over 700 years, the castle embodies all the grandeur of a medieval stronghold, with its towering walls, turrets, and towers. Fans of Harry Potter may even recognise some locations. Inside, the lavish state apartments are adorned with exquisite art, fine furniture, and centuries of history.

The award-winning Alnwick Gardens, created by the 12th Duchess of Northumberland, extend across 12 acres of beautifully designed landscapes. Highlights include the spectacular Grand Cascade with its 120 dancing water jets and the intriguing Poison Garden.

Day Three: Seahouses, Bamburgh & the Holy Island of Lindisfarne

Today, we enjoy a full day tour of the beautiful Northumbrian Coast, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our tour begins in the charming fishing village of Seahouses, offering stunning views across to the Farne Islands. We continue to the historic village of Bamburgh, where we’ll visit the Grade I listed St. Aidan’s Church and learn the inspiring story of Grace Darling’s heroic sea rescue in 1838. Our stop will include a visit to the imposing Bamburgh Castle, whose origins date back to Anglo Saxon times.

A short drive takes us on to lunch at the Barn at Beal (at own cost), before we cross the tidal causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. On arrival, we’ll enjoy an introductory walking tour of the village, including St. Mary’s Parish Church and the haunting ruins of the Priory. Afterwards, there will be free time to explore at our own pace before we return to our hotel in Alnwick.

Dress Code
The dress code for during the day is casual and layers are recommended. In the evenings the dress code is smart casual. Comfortable shoes for walking and sightseeing are recommended.
Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. To give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. The Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection at the beginning of your holiday to cover drivers, guides, porters and hotel staff of approximately £15. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip.
