Day Two: Untertal Loop

This varied route winds through lush green meadows and past picturesque alpine farms. Along the way, we'll cross the Toteisboden, a steep stretch of moorland that functions as a natural refrigerator, trapping cold air in winter and gradually releasing it during the summer months. After a short walk, the trail leads to Tettermoor before continuing towards the mouth of the valley, where the awe-inspiring Dachstein massif rises dramatically to dominate the skyline.
  • Level: Easy to Moderate
  • Distance: 10km

  • Duration: 3 hrs approx.

Day Three: Three Lakes Walk

Day Three: Three Lakes Walk

After breakfast, we transfer to the trailhead near the Seewigtalstüberl to begin our hike. In the aptly named “Valley of Plunging Waters,” we are immersed in a striking landscape shaped by mountains and water. Three crystal-clear alpine lakes, two thundering waterfalls, and countless panoramic viewpoints accompany us throughout the day. Our first destination, the Steirischer Bodensee, is reached with ease and sets the tone for the journey. From here, we follow the lakeshore towards the head of the valley, climbing a steep section past a cascading waterfall to the Hans-Wödl-Hütte, with beautiful views back over the Bodensee.

A short walk from the hut brings us to the Hüttensee, the second lake of the day. We then continue along the shore and make a final ascent to the Obersee, where we pause for a short break before returning along the same route, stopping once more at the Hans-Wödl-Hütte on the way back.

Those wishing to explore can make use of the included Schladming-Dachstein Summer Card to discover more of the surrounding area. One option is to take a short bus journey to Dachstein, where the Glacier Lift carries us up to the Dachstein Glacier. From Styria’s highest peak, breathtaking panoramic views await.

Day Five: Salzkammergut Lakes: Strobl to St. Wolfgang & Hallstatt

We begin in Strobl with a scenic walk to St. Wolfgang, a delightful lakeside town rich in tradition and alpine charm. Today's hike follows a picturesque route around the Bürglstein, rewarding you with lovely views back toward Strobl. The final stretch to St. Wolfgang continues along a shared walking and cycling path.

From here, we enjoy a journey on the historic Schafbergbahn cogwheel railway, ascending to the summit of Mount Schafberg. At the top, sweeping panoramic views unfold across the sparkling lakes of the Salzkammergut. The day concludes with a visit to the storybook village of Hallstatt, beautifully set between towering mountains and the lake—one of Austria’s most iconic and photogenic destinations.

Day Seven: Lake Duisitzkarsee

Day Seven: Lake Duisitzkarsee

Today’s hike begins at the Eschachalm in the Obertal Valley at 1,211 metres. From here, we follow either a forest road or a marked hiking path towards Neualm and the Keinprechthütte. The route climbs steadily but gently, reaching Neualm (1,618 m). The trail leads out of the valley towards Duisitzkarsee Lake, winding along the slopes of the Duisitzer Hahnkamp, passing through tranquil mountain forest and wide stretches of dwarf pine eventually arriving at Duisitzkarsee Lake at 1,640 metres. Refreshed by snacks from the mountain huts, the final stage of the hike is the descent back to the Eschachalm trailhead.

If you are unsure as to whether the walks are within your capabilities, please contact the office to discuss this matter, thus making sure you appreciate the terrain that you will be walking. You could be walking across uneven ground in some areas and extreme care must be taken, especially if wet. If used to using a pole/stick, it is advisable to bring it.

Please appreciate the route and content of the holiday may change at the time and at the discretion of the guide/organiser, should conditions require. Solo’s Holidays Ltd cannot be held responsible for personal injury, accident or damage to property whilst on these walks other than incidents arising out of the company’s negligence.

The guide has the right to refuse to guide a walk with anyone not properly attired.
What to Wear
It is of paramount importance that you have the correct footwear. It is essential to wear walking boots that are comfortable and preferably lightweight, with some ankle support and a good grip. If you already have a pair of boots that you are happy walking in (including during hot/wet weather and on hard ground), then bring these along. However, if you are bringing new footwear, do make sure they are well broken in before you arrive. Experience has shown that wearing 2 pairs of woollen socks adds to comfort.

Whilst we would hope for good weather during your holiday, it is of course impossible to guarantee this. We would therefore recommend you travel with clothing suitable for all conditions, and suggest you use the following checklist as a guideline of what to take: Walking boots with good ankle support Waterproofs – jacket and trousers Walking poles – recommended as they provide good support for the knees, particularly on downhill sections of walks and when conditions are wet/slippery Lightweight trousers and shorts with pockets Shirts or t-shirts for walking in Walking socks – several pairs Lightweight fleece or jumper Hat & gloves Daysack/rucksack for walking Umbrella – it can be used also for protection from the sun as well as rain Lightweight drinking bottle to carry water whilst walking Small first aid kit – plasters, insect repellent, etc Good, high factor sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses
Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover transfer drivers, and hotel staff of €25 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % to add on.
More to Explore
There will be plenty for you to see and do during your own leisure time during your holiday, full details of which will be given out at your Information Meeting by your Tour Leader.
Passports and visas

Passport validity

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements. Your passport must be:
  • Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. Contact the embassy of the country you are visiting if you think that your passport does not meet both these requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

Visas

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies if you travel as a tourist, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events, or for short-term studies or training. If you are travelling to Austria and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

From the 12th October 2025 the EU is introducing a new European Entry System (EES) that will be phased in and fully operational by the 10th April 2026. Non-EU nationals including British passport holders will now be required to complete biometric checks on arrival and exit to Schengen countries, which will include facial recognition and fingerprints. There is no cost for this, and no action needs to be taken prior to departure.

Health Requirements
Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Austria, including the high Alps. More information about altitude sickness is available from TravelHealthPro (from the UK’s National Travel Health Network and Centre). At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country-specific health advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website. Each country-specific page has information on vaccine recommendations, any current health risks or outbreaks, and factsheets with information on staying healthy abroad. Guidance is also available from NHS (Scotland) on the FitForTravel website.

General information on travel vaccinations and a travel health checklist is available on the NHS website. You may then wish to contact your health adviser or pharmacy for advice on other preventive measures and managing any pre-existing medical conditions while you’re abroad.
