Surrounded by mountains and fjords, Bergen is Norway's second largest city, yet it offers small town charm with its colourful wooden buildings, narrow cobbled streets and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Bryggen, a Hanseatic wharf, which is a glorious remnant from when Bergen was a key centre for trade between Norway and Europe. This evening we gather to have a welcome drink and dinner to get to know our fellow travellers.

High above Mount Fløyen, our guide leads us through pristine landscapes, ascending to lofty summits boasting unparalleled panoramas of Bergen and its encircling ocean. The trail meanders downward with graceful twists and turns, offering ample opportunities to pause and admire the city's grandeur from thoughtfully placed benches.
As we draw closer to the base, the tranquil waters of Skansedammen lake greet us, an idyllic finale to our mountain walk. We have the option to forego the cable car descent from Fløyen and instead opt for a leisurelyy one-hour stroll back to the city, Alternatively, we can retrace our ascent by taking the Fløibanen once more, bringing the day full circle.

Following breakfast, we make our way to Bergen Train Station to embark on an unforgettable journey to Myrdal aboard the iconic Flåm Railway. Renowned as one of Norway's most remarkable travel experiences, this 20 km route unfolds a spellbinding panorama of rivers slicing through rugged ravines, cascading waterfalls, snow-dusted peaks, and precarious mountain farms perched on sheer cliffs. Along the way, we pause for a memorable photo stop at the thundering Kjosfossen waterfall. Once in Flåm, we board a ferry and head to Gudvangen, through Nærøyfjord. It's no surprise that Nærøyfjord is featured on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. A fjord cruise through this narrow and beautiful fjord is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

When in Gudvangen, we head to the Viking Valley - the setting for the town of Njardarheimr, bringing to life the real history and culture of the Viking age. This daily route offers five and a half hours of uninterrupted beauty, sailing entirely through sheltered inshore waters, ensuring we are never far from dramatic landscapes and striking landmarks. Departing Bergen, we pass beneath two engineering marvels, the Askøybroen (Askøy Bridge) and Sotrabrua (Sotra Bridge), each gracefully connecting the mainland to the Hordaland's islands. Further along, the elegant Karmsund Bru (Karmsund Bridge) comes into view, connecting Karmøy and Haugesund. Its distinctive sweeping arch perfectly embodies the harmony of Western Norway’s voyages, where raw nature and human ingenuity meet. A favourite among photographers, it’s a sight best enjoyed with a camera in hand. On arrival in Stavanger port we transfer to our hotel in Stavanger where we'll spend the next three nights.

Day Six: Preikestolen Cruise & Walk

Day Six: Preikestolen Cruise & Walk

Today, we set out to experience one of Norway's most iconic natural wonders: Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock. Towering 604m above the shimmering waters of the Lysefjord, this dramatic cliff was sculpted over 10,000 years ago by retreating glaciers. It has since become a symbol of Norway's breathtaking landscapes, a place where sheer rock meets endless sky.

Our journey begins with a fjord cruise through stunning Lysefjord. Departing from Stavanger, we glide past idyllic islands, rocky shores and steep mountains that plunge straight into the water. Along the way, we witness the crystalline flow of Hengjane Falls and glimpse the storied Vagabond’s Cave, steeped in local legend. The cruise ends at the quaint village of Forsand, where a bus takes us to the Preikestolen base camp.

The 8km round trip walk o Preikestolen is considered moderately challenging, taking approximately 4-5 hours. The path unfolds through varied terrain: swamplands rich with moss and wildflowers, shaded forest trails, and impressive stone stairways expertly crafted by Nepalese Sherpas. Expect sections of steep, uneven rock and stretches of bare mountain ledge—each step drawing us closer to the famous cliff edge, where Norway’s wild beauty stretches as far as the eye can see.

Day Seven: Randaberg Coastal Walk

Day Seven: Randaberg Coastal Walk

After breakfast at the hotel, we transfer to the Randaberg region near Stavanger for a scenic coastal walk. The route takes us along beaches and rugged shoreline, with chances to spot seabirds, before reaching Tungenes Lighthouse at the tip of the Stavanger Peninsula. First lit in 1828, the lighthouse once guided ships into the Byfjorden, the main approach to Stavanger.

No longer in use, the lighthouse is now used as a fine arts venue and maritime museum. From here, we follow the coastal path around the peninsula to a sheltered bay before continuing along the shore and completing our loop back to the starting point. We then transfer back to the hotel in Stavanger.

Trip Reviews

Really good mix

Challenging walks on rough terrain: Ulriken and Pulpit Rock were my favourite walks. I also enjoyed the fjord cruises. I liked that most evening meals were not included so that I was free to do my own thing in the evenings. I liked that each walk was on different types of terrain and environments so that it didn’t feel like I was repeating the same walk every day. We had a really good mix of woodland, Rocky Mountains, coastal.

Good variety of walks

Visiting a new country and meeting fellow travellers. Good variety of walks and experiences.

Friendliness of the group

The walking and excursions, the friendliness of the group, the excellent tour leader

The itinerary & variety

The itinerary and variety. The pace and travel and transport arrangements. Lovely hotels and cities with phenomenal breakfasts and comfort. Exciting agenda. The camaraderie of the other travellers. The walking routes and destinations.

Essential Information

Transfer
From Bergen Airport to the hotel, the transfer is approximately 25 minutes depending on traffic. From the hotel in Stavanger to Stavanger Airport, the transfer is approximately 30 minutes depending on traffic.
Important information
It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fit and well enough to take part in your chosen activity holiday. If you are unsure as to whether the walks are within your capabilities, please contact the office to discuss this matter, thus making sure you appreciate the terrain that you will be walking. The nature of the terrain in the Norwegian fjords area is such that walking can be quite tough, with steep ascents and descents. You will be walking across uneven ground in some areas and extreme care must be taken, especially if wet. If used to using a pole/stick, it is advisable to bring it. Please appreciate the route and content of the holiday may change at the time and at the discretion of the guide/organiser, should conditions require. Solo’s Holidays cannot be held responsible for personal injury, accident or damage to property whilst on these walks other than incidents arising out of the company’s negligence. The guide has the right to refuse to guide a walk with anyone not properly attired.
Dress code
It is of paramount importance that you have the correct footwear for this walking holiday. It is essential to wear walking boots that are comfortable and preferably lightweight, with some ankle support and a good grip. If you already have a pair of boots that you are happy walking in (including during hot/wet weather and on hard ground), then bring these along. However, if you are bringing new footwear, do make sure they are well broken in before you arrive. Experience has shown that wearing 2 pairs of woollen socks adds to comfort. Whilst we would hope for good weather during your holiday, it is of course impossible to guarantee this. We would therefore recommend you travel with clothing suitable for all conditions, and suggest you use the following checklist as a guideline of what to take:
  • Walking boots with good ankle support
  • Waterproofs – jacket and trousers
  • Walking poles – recommended as they provide good support for the knees, particularly on downhill sections of walks and when conditions are wet/slippery
  • Lightweight trousers and shorts with pockets
  • Shirts or t-shirts for walking in
  • Walking socks – several pairs
  • Lightweight fleece or jumper
  • Daysack/rucksack for walking
  • Lightweight drinking bottle to carry water whilst walking
  • Small first aid kit – plasters, insect repellant, etc
  • Good, high factor sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses
Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover transfer drivers, and hotel staff of 300.00NOK per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate percentage on.
Passport, Visa & Entry Requirements

Passport validity

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements. Your passport must be:
  • issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

Visas

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies if you travel as a tourist, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events, or for short-term studies or training. If you are travelling to Norway and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

From the 12th October 2025 the EU is introducing a new European Entry System (EES) that will be phased in and fully operational by the 10th April 2026. Non-EU nationals including British passport holders will now be required to complete biometric checks on arrival and exit to Schengen countries, which will include facial recognition and fingerprints. There is no cost for this, and no action needs to be taken prior to departure.

Health Requirements
Compulsory vaccinations: None. At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country-specific health advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website. Each country-specific page has information on vaccine recommendations, any current health risks or outbreaks, and factsheets with information on staying healthy abroad.

Guidance is also available from NHS (Scotland) on the FitForTravel website. General information on travel vaccinations and a travel health checklist is available on the NHS website. You may then wish to contact your health adviser or pharmacy for advice on other preventive measures and managing any pre-existing medical conditions while you’re abroad.
