During our visit, we gain insight into vital kiwi recovery programmes and the crucial role they play in bringing this treasured national icon back from the brink of extinction on mainland New Zealand.

Here, we stop at a local winery to sample some of their finest offerings.

We continue along a narrow strip of land, nestled between the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean and rugged mountains, to Kaikōura, where the mountains meet the sea. Further south, we tour Westland National Park, home to the awe-inspiring Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, set against a backdrop of rainforest and rugged mountains. While here, there is the option to take to the skies on a spectacular 20-minute scenic helicopter flight (additional cost), offering a rare chance to get up close to a glacier and even touch the snow. As we travel south along the remote West Coast Road, there is a growing sense of entering a primeval wilderness, where isolation and raw natural beauty prevail. Arriving at Haast, we are immersed in a dramatic landscape of dense rainforest, wetlands, sweeping sand dunes and surf-pounded shingle beaches. This pristine region forms part of the Te Wāhipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area, designated for the exceptional natural value of South Westland and Fiordland, which together showcase some of the world’s most dramatic forest, mountain and coastal scenery.

After time to enjoy the scenery, we travel onward via Cromwell, following the stunning Kawarau Gorge Road, carved between steep rock faces and turquoise river waters, before arriving in the alpine resort town of Queenstown.

This evening, enjoy a taste of New Zealand’s rural heritage. Steeped in Queenstown’s pioneering history, the experience begins with a tranquil cruise across Lake Wakatipu aboard the beautifully restored 1912 vintage steamship, the TSS Earnslaw. We disembark at Walter Peak High Country Farm, one of the region’s earliest and still working farms. After dinner, enjoy an entertaining farm experience, including a traditional sheep-shearing display, offering an authentic insight into rural life in New Zealand.

Day Sixteen: Arrowtown & Central Otago

Today we retrace our journey back to Queenstown, where we’ll call into Arrowtown — a township with a colourful history set on the banks of the Arrow River. Many of the original deciduous trees, planted by the goldminers, shade the town’s cottages and stone buildings. In its heyday, Arrowtown was a rough-and-ready frontier town. There are many beautiful and interesting walks around this historic area, or we may wish to visit some of the excellent art galleries, cafés or boutiques that now line the main street.

From Arrowtown, we travel north through the rugged Kawarau Gorge to Cromwell, a popular stone-fruit growing area. Passing pretty Lake Dunstan and crossing the distinctive Central Otago countryside to the dramatic Lindis Pass, which links Central Otago with the Mackenzie Basin, we arrive in Twizel in the late afternoon. Dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant tonight.

This morning, we depart Twizel and follow the shimmering shores of Lake Pūkaki into Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. At the heart of New Zealand’s most spectacular alpine landscape stands Mount Cook, rising to 3,724 metres as the highest peak in Australasia. We enjoy some time at leisure in Mount Cook Village, surrounded by dramatic mountain vistas. Retracing our journey along Lake Pūkaki, we continue to Tekapo to admire the striking blue waters of Lake Tekapo. Here, we visit the Church of the Good Shepherd and the statue of the Mackenzie Sheepdog, both set against a stunning alpine backdrop. Our journey then continues across the vast Mackenzie Basin, over Burke’s Pass and through Fairlie, Geraldine and Ashburton, before crossing the Canterbury Plains into Christchurch.

Dress code
Casual daytime light-weight “layers” are recommended. Comfortable shoes are a “must” for sightseeing. Smart, casual wear for the evenings. Dressing in layers to allow for changes in temperature is recommended as New Zealand can experience variable weather, so it is also advised to bring a waterproof jacket.
Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. To give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. The Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual.

We suggest a group collection at the beginning of your holiday to cover drivers, guides, porters and hotel staff of approximately NZD5 per day. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip.
