Day One: Arrival into Germany

Day One: Arrival into Germany

Today we will arrive into Germany and transfer from Munich Airport to the mountains of Bavaria where we will spend the first four nights in picturesque village of Oberammergau nestled in the Bavarian Alps. Known for its rich history, beautiful frescoed buildings (Lüftlmalerei), and strong artistic traditions. It is world-famous for its Passion Play, a once-in-a-decade theatrical performance that has been staged since 1634.

Day Two: Neuschwanstein Castle & Schloss Hohenschwangau

Day Two: Neuschwanstein Castle & Schloss Hohenschwangau

Today we begin our day at Neuschwanstein Castle, often called “the fairytale castle,” and is one of Germany’s most famous landmarks. Perched on a rugged hill near Füssen, this stunning 19th-century castle was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and served as his dream retreat, inspired by medieval legends and Wagnerian operas, although the castle was never completed due to his mysterious early death. With its soaring towers, white limestone façade, and breathtaking mountain backdrop make it look like something out of a dream and the castle was the model for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle and is one of the most photographed places in the world. Our guided tour will showcase the throne hall, the grand bedroom, and lavish murals inspired by German myths.
 
We will continue the day with a visit to Schloss Hohenschwangau which is famous for its fairytale-like grandeur, Hohenschwangau offers a more intimate and authentic glimpse into royal life. This was the summer home of King Ludwig II and his parents, King Maximilian II and Queen Marie of Bavaria which overlooks Alpsee Lake and surrounded by picturesque mountains, the castle provides stunning panoramic views. Rebuilt in the 19th century on medieval ruins, the castle features stunning yellow-orange walls, giving it a warm and inviting appearance. Our guided tour reveals rooms filled with original 19th-century furniture, detailed murals, and artifacts from Ludwig II’s early years.

Day Three: Zugspitze

Day Three: Zugspitze

After breakfast we will make our way further into the Bavarian Alps to the beautiful town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, known for its stunning mountain landscapes, skiing resorts, and charming alpine atmosphere. From here we will head to the tallest mountain in Germany, Zugspitze, rising to 2,962 meters (9,718 feet) above sea level. Riding the cable car, with nearly 3,000m of elevation gain, we will witness spectacular views as we ascend. From the summit of Zugspitze, we will see over 400 mountain peaks across four countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy) with breathtaking panoramic views. We will also make our way to Zugspitze Plateau, riding the Gletscherbahn Cable Car, the plateau is a breathtaking high-altitude area located just below the summit of Zugspitze. 

 
Nestled at the foot of Zugspitze, Lake Eibsee is one of the most picturesque and serene lakes in Bavaria. With its crystal-clear turquoise waters, small islands, and a stunning mountain backdrop, creating postcard-perfect views.

Day Four: Linderhof Castle and Ettal Monastery

Day Four: Linderhof Castle and Ettal Monastery

Today we head to one of the most famous castles in Germany, Linderhof Palace. This castle was also commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Linderhof was intended as a private retreat for King Ludwig II, and it reflects his eccentric personality and love of nature. The king spent much of his time here, enjoying the solitude and tranquillity of the area. The palace is designed in the Rococo style, featuring intricate, elaborate interiors with rich decorations, gilded furniture, and luxurious materials. The structure is relatively small compared to other royal palaces but is stunningly detailed and ornate. Linderhof is surrounded by magnificent gardens, including terraces, fountains, and a large, artificial lake. One of the most famous features is the "Venus Grotto," an artificial cave designed to resemble a mystical, water-filled grotto, which Ludwig II loved to visit. There’s also a large fountain and beautifully landscaped areas perfect for a peaceful stroll. Our tour takes us inside to see its grand rooms, including the Hall of Mirrors and the King's private chambers.

 
Continuing the day, we head to Ettal Monastery, which is a stunning Benedictine monastery located in the Bavarian Alps, near the village of Ettal and the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The monastery is renowned for its breathtaking Baroque architecture, historical significance, and beautiful surroundings. Here's a more in-depth look at the monastery. We will learn about the church and the grounds, and about the monastery’s history, architecture, and the lives of the monks.

Day Five: Herreninsel

Day Five: Herreninsel

After breakfast, we depart Oberammergau and make our way to Prien am Chiemsee, located on the shore of Lake Chiemsee. This charming town is the gateway to the famous islands Herreninsel, home to Herrenchiemsee Palace, and Fraueninsel, which houses a historic abbey. 


The Herrenchiemsee palace is often referred to as "Germany's Versailles" due to its inspiration from the opulent Palace of Versailles in France. Another palace commissioned by King Ludwig II, construction began in 1878, but like Neuschwanstein Castle, it was not finished before King Ludwig II’s death, as a result, the palace remains incomplete, with several planned areas and sections left unfinished. Herrenchiemsee Palace has a central layout that closely follows that of Versailles, including a grand Hall of Mirrors, large ceremonial rooms, and lush gardens. While the palace is smaller than Versailles, its grandeur and luxury still leave an unforgettable impression. The gardens surrounding Herrenchiemsee Palace were designed in the style of French formal gardens, also reminiscent of those at Versailles.

Day Six: Berchtesgaden & Eagles Nest

Day Six: Berchtesgaden & Eagles Nest

Today we make our way to the beautiful town of Berchtesgaden, located in the south-eastern corner of Germany, near the border with Austria. Nestled in the Alps, it's known for its stunning landscapes, historical sites, and proximity to some of the most picturesque natural attractions in the region. The town itself is quaint and picturesque, with charming Alpine-style buildings, cobbled streets, and traditional Bavarian shops. 

 
While here, we will head up to the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps. Originally built as a retreat for Adolf Hitler, who ironically rarely visited due to his fear of heights and vertigo, it has since become a popular tourist destination with historical significance and today, the building operates as a restaurant and museum, offering insight into its past and the Nazi era. At the top, the 360-degree panoramic views from the top are breathtaking, offering sights of Berchtesgaden National Park, the Königssee, and even Salzburg (Austria) on clear days.

Essential Information

Transfer time
From Munich Airport to Oberammergau where our first hotel is, it is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.
 
From the hotel in Prien am Chiemsee to Munich Airport, it is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. 
Dress Code
The dress code for during the day is casual. It can be windy and temperature might drop when at altitude so a light windproof jacket might be useful. In the evenings the dress code is smart casual. Comfortable shoes for walking and sightseeing are recommended.
Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. To give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. The Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection at the beginning of your holiday to cover drivers, guides, porters and hotel staff of approximately €25. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip.
Important information
A reasonable level of fitness/mobility is required as we include plenty of sightseeing/travelling. Itinerary is subject to change according to traffic, weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances beyond control.
General Information
Please note: At the beginning of your trip, your Tour Leader will ask if you would be happy to sign a photo permission form. This means that any photographs taken during your holiday can be used by Solos to share what the Solos experience is all about. It also means you have lots of memories to go home with! Details will be given at your welcome meeting.

WhatsApp Group: Just before the start of your trip, you will be sent an invite to the WhatsApp group which will put you in touch with your fellow Solos travellers and Tour Leader prior to your departure day. By choosing to join, you're consenting to share your contact details with other members of your group. However, if you prefer not to join, that's completely fine, and you can meet the group on your first day instead. Please note, if you have not received an email within 24 hours of departure, we recommend you check your email junk folder.
Passport, Visa & Entry Requirement
We recommend that you check passport and visa requirements for the country you are visiting at the State Department if you have a U.S. Passport. Most countries require that your passport have at least six months validity when traveling internationally, and many require that you have one to two blank visa pages for either an entry stamp or visa. As a general rule, please check that your passport has six months validity beyond your planned trip, and if not, please renew your passport with plenty of time to provide Solos with your updated passport information by the final payment due date.
Health requirements
We recommend that you check if vaccinations are required for your destination at the CDC’s recommendations for your visited destination(s). We also recommend you purchase travel protection. A travel protection plan can often assist with medical emergencies and reimburse costs that are covered by the plan. Please verify coverage details with Solos before you travel.
