Day Two: Caldera and vineyards of Bandama & Historical Las Palmas

We first head for the Bandama volcano, for a short walk along the floor of its impressive crater over a kilometre in diameter and 220 metres deep, the result of a particularly violent explosion some 2,000 years ago when the lava came into contact with a sheet of water. This caldera is well known to geologists as one of the best examples of this type of phreato-magmatic eruption. We start by walking around the crest of the caldera and then descend to the bottom, where the isolated world of a former 17th-century winery awaits us.

A small thermophilous forest, made up of the most representative trees of the Canary Islands, such as the palm and dragon tree, grows on the slopes of the crater, as well as vines, traditionally cultivated since the 17th century. We end the day in the Vegueta district, in the historic centre of the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, to discover the characteristic architecture of the old town founded in 1478 by the Spanish conquerors.

Day Four: Discover the Tropical Valley

Day Four: Discover the Tropical Valley

Our hike begins more than 800m above sea level, at the head of Agaete valley, located in the northwest of Gran Canaria. We are surrounded by the beautiful views of this secluded area, where several water reservoirs cover the rocky bottom of the ravine. After a short ascent, our hike becomes largely downhill.

Our route takes us past the troglodyte hamlet of 'El Hornillo', with its cave houses excavated into the impressive cliffs. We then take an old path with views of the valley and the sea, taking us down to the hamlet of 'El Sao' - famous for its old water mills. Later, we walk through a small pine tree forest, just above the derelict 19th century spa which started health tourism in the Canaries in the 1900s.

The path finally reaches the bottom of the valley. From then on, it crosses through tropical fruit orchards that have made this valley so famous. Its particular micro climate allows for a great variety of tropical crops, such as avocados, bananas, guavas, mangoes, oranges. Its real claim to fame however is that it is the only area in Europe with its own local coffee production.

Day Five: Climb to the foot of the Sacred Monolith

Day Five: Climb to the foot of the Sacred Monolith

Today’s walk begins on a high plateau in central Gran Canaria, where we follow a scenic path through Canary Island pine forest with panoramic views of Roque Nublo — the island’s iconic rocky peak. On clear days, Tenerife and La Gomera are visible on the horizon. We pause at the Ventana del Nublo, a remarkable natural rock window, before continuing to Roque Nublo itself — a towering basalt monolith once sacred to the island’s aboriginal Guanche people.

The final climb to the foot of the monolith, offers us magnificent views of the spectacular Caldera de Tejeda, the sacred 'Roque Bentayga', and the deep canyons that cut through the west of  the island.

Day Seven: Explore the Great Caldera

Day Seven: Explore the Great Caldera

We begin our hike 1500 metres above sea level, near the ridge that divides the verdant north and the arid south of the island. We experience magnificent views while walking along our route under the shade of Canarian pine trees . The path reaches Moriscos, its highest point (1750m), and continues along the edge of Caldera de Tejeda, offering breathtaking views across its huge 16km volcanic depression, the result of a gigantic collapse that hollowed out the centre of the island. After a gentle walk through the pine forest, we explore 'Cuevas del Caballero', a group of pre-Hispanic caves on the edge of the Caldera's wall.

We end our walk at the troglodyte village of Artenara, one of the highest settlements in Spain,  located 1270 metres above sea level and famous for its fabulous cave dwellings. We have the chance to visit one of these caves at Casa Cueva Museum, a charming example of how the locals lived just a few decades ago.

What to Wear
It is of paramount importance that you have the correct footwear. It is essential to wear walking boots that are comfortable and preferably lightweight, with some ankle support and a good grip. If you already have a pair of boots that you are happy walking in (including during hot/wet weather and on hard ground), then bring these along. However, if you are bringing new footwear, do make sure they are well broken in before you arrive. Experience has shown that wearing 2 pairs of woollen socks adds to comfort. The weather, even in summer, can be unpredictable. We would therefore recommend you travel with clothing suitable for all conditions, and suggest you use the following checklist as a guideline of what to take:
  • Walking boots with good ankle support
  • Waterproofs – jacket and trousers
  • Walking poles – recommended as they provide good support for the knees, particularly on downhill sections of walks and when conditions are wet/slippery
  • Lightweight trousers and shorts with pockets
  • Shirts or t-shirts for walking in
  • Walking socks – several pairs
  • Lightweight fleece or jumper
  • Hat & gloves
  • Daysack/rucksack for walking
  • Umbrella – it can be used also for protection from the sun as well as rain
  • Lightweight drinking bottle to carry water whilst walking
  • Small first aid kit – plasters, insect repellant, etc
  • Good, high factor sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses.
Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover guides, transfer drivers, and hotel staff of €25.00 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % add on.
Passport & Visa Entry
We recommend that you check passport and visa requirements for the country you are visiting at the State Department if you have a U.S. Passport. Most countries require that your passport have at least six months validity when traveling internationally, and many require that you have one to two blank visa pages for either an entry stamp or visa. As a general rule, please check that your passport has six months validity beyond your planned trip, and if not, please renew your passport with plenty of time to provide Solos with your updated passport information by the final payment due date.

Not sure what travel documents you need? Our trusted partner, sherpa°, makes it easy to check visa and entry requirements based on your destination and passport. One quick check now means smooth sailing later. Click here to learn more.
Health Requirements
We recommend that you check if vaccinations are required for your destination at the CDC’s recommendations for your visited destination(s). We also recommend you purchase travel protection. A travel protection plan can often assist with medical emergencies and reimburse costs that are covered by the plan. Please verify coverage details with Solos before you travel.
