Our route takes us across the border into the charming Slovak village of Leśnica, known for its traditional wooden houses and cozy taverns. Day Three: Niedzica Castle – Czorsztyn Lake

Day Three: Niedzica Castle – Czorsztyn Lake

After breakfast, we set out for an exciting day filled with a variety of experiences. Our journey begins with a transfer to Niedzica, where we visit the impressive Niedzica Castle. Once a vital border post of the Polish Crown, it remains the most important fortified stronghold in the Pieniny Mountains. From its walls, we can admire one of the most iconic castle silhouettes in Poland, beautifully framed by the distant Czorsztyn Castle across the lake.

From the castle, we stroll down to the harbour and board a boat for a relaxing sightseeing cruise on Lake Czorsztyn. With its café and deck seating, the boat offers the perfect vantage point to enjoy the scenery — from the Gorce Mountains and the striking Green Rocks to the Niedzica and Czorsztyn castles reflected in the calm waters of this artificial reservoir.

After the cruise, there’s time to unwind at Zamajerz-Zamek beach, the only lifeguard-supervised swimming area on the lake. Stretching for nine kilometres, its shores are ideal for recreation and relaxation, whether you choose to swim, sail, or simply take in the picturesque mountain surroundings.

We then enjoy a walk across the crown of the Niedzica Dam. This broad promenade offers spectacular views: on one side, the shimmering waters of Lake Czorsztyn dotted with sailboats; on the other, the winding Dunajec River valley. From here, the castle stands majestically above the water, framed by the peaks of the Pieniny Mountains — a perfect spot for photos and quiet reflection.

Before returning, we stop at a traditional bacówka, a wooden shepherd’s hut, where we watch the preparation of oscypek, the region’s famous smoked sheep cheese, and of course, enjoy a tasting.

In the evening, we transfer back to Szczawnica for dinner and an overnight stay at our centrally located hotel.

Essential Information

Transfer Time
Krakow airport to the Szczawnica Park Resort & Spa is approximately 2hrs 20 minutes.
Dress Code
It is of paramount importance that you have the correct footwear for this walking tour. It is essential to wear walking boots that are comfortable and preferably lightweight, with some ankle support and a good grip. If you already have a pair of boots that you are happy walking in (including during hot/wet weather and on hard ground), then bring these along. However, if you are bringing new footwear, do make sure they are well broken in before you arrive. Experience has shown that wearing 2 pairs of wool socks adds to comfort. Whilst we would hope for good weather during your holiday, it is of course impossible to guarantee this. We would therefore recommend you travel with clothing suitable for all conditions, and suggest you use the following checklist as a guideline of what to take:
  • Walking boots with good ankle support
  • Waterproofs – jacket and trousers
  • Walking poles – recommended as they provide good support for the knees, particularly on downhill sections of walks and when conditions are wet/slippery
  • Lightweight trousers and shorts with pockets
  • Shirts or t-shirts for walking in
  • Walking poles
  • Walking socks – several pairs
  • Lightweight fleece or jumper
  • Daysack/rucksack for walking
  • Lightweight drinking bottle to carry water whilst walking
  • Small first aid kit – plasters, insect repellant, etc
  • Good, high factor sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses
Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. In order to give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. Your Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection to cover drivers, porters and hotel staff of $35.00.

Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate add on.

Health requirements

We recommend that you check if vaccinations are required for your destination at the CDC’s recommendations for your visited destination(s). We also recommend you purchase travel protection. A travel protection plan can often assist with medical emergencies and reimburse costs that are covered by the plan. Please verify coverage details with Solos before you travel.

Passports and visas

We recommend that you check passport and visa requirements for the country you are visiting at the State Department if you have a U.S. Passport. Most countries require that your passport have at least six months validity when traveling internationally, and many require that you have one to two blank visa pages for either an entry stamp or visa. As a general rule, please check that your passport has six months validity beyond your planned trip, and if not, please renew your passport with plenty of time to provide Solos with your updated passport information by the final payment due date.

Not sure what travel documents you need? Our trusted partner, sherpa°, makes it easy to check visa and entry requirements based on your destination and passport. One quick check now means smooth sailing later. Click here to learn more.
