Day Two: Edinburgh Castle & Walking Tour

Today, we step back in time to discover the fascinating history of Edinburgh on a guided walking tour through Scotland’s majestic capital.

Our day begins at Edinburgh Castle, which dominates the city skyline from its perch atop the ancient volcanic rock of Castle Rock. Stroll along the castle’s promenade as you hear captivating tales of its origins, battles, and royal intrigues. Explore the magnificent 16th-century Great Hall, once the setting for grand feasts and celebrations, and uncover the bloody history of the monarchs who called this fortress home.

Next, we visit the stunning St Giles’ Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture built around 1880 and a site of worship for over 900 years. Its striking crown-shaped steeple shines beautifully when lit at night. Our walk continues past the National Galleries of Scotland before we make our way along the city’s most iconic thoroughfare, the Royal Mile. Stretching from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to Edinburgh Castle, this cobblestone street is lined with historic landmarks, charming closes and centuries-old architecture, each stone steeped in story and character.

We conclude our tour at the famed World’s End pub, a beloved local institution where you can relax and soak up the atmosphere — the perfect way to end your day exploring the heart of Edinburgh.

On arrival, we’ll take time to wander its quaint streets, browse local shops, or relax with coffee and cake in one of its cozy cafés.

Departing Pitlochry, we travel through the Cairngorms National Park, where rugged mountains and sweeping landscapes showcase the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Our journey ends in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, where history, legend, and breathtaking scenery await.

This afternoon we’ll visit Stirling Castle, one of Scotland’s grandest and most historically significant fortresses. Essential Information

Passport & Visa Information

We recommend that you check passport and visa requirements for the country you are visiting at the State Department if you have a U.S. Passport. Most countries require that your passport have at least six months validity when traveling internationally, and many require that you have one to two blank visa pages for either an entry stamp or visa. As a general rule, please check that your passport has six months validity beyond your planned trip, and if not, please renew your passport with plenty of time to provide Solos with your updated passport information by the final payment due date.

Not sure what travel documents you need? Our trusted partner, sherpa°, makes it easy to check visa and entry requirements based on your destination and passport. One quick check now means smooth sailing later. Click here to learn more.

Health Requirements

We recommend that you check if vaccinations are required for your destination at the CDC’s recommendations for your visited destination(s). We also recommend you purchase travel protection. A travel protection plan can often assist with medical emergencies and reimburse costs that are covered by the plan. Please verify coverage details with Solos before you travel.

Reasonable fitness and mobility is required as there will be long travelling days and a reasonable amount of walking.

Pound Stiring - GBP
Transfer Time
The transfer time from Edinburgh International Airport to the hotel is approximately 30 minutes depending on traffic.
Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. To give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. The Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection at the beginning of your holiday to cover drivers, guides, porters and hotel staff of approximately £40. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip.
Important Information
Please note that entrance to Eilean Donan Castle is not included and is payable locally. Admission to the castle can only be purchased on site, on the day of visit. Tickets are £12 for adults and £11 for concessions (Seniors Aged 60+), subject to change for 2026.
