This morning we leave Oslo by train and travel to Lillehammer, a charming town in eastern Norway, beautifully set on the shores of Lake Mjøsa and surrounded by forests and mountains. Its cosy centre, with cafés, shops and traditional wooden houses, creates a relaxed small-town atmosphere. Lillehammer is best known internationally for hosting the 1994 Winter Olympics, which helped establish it as one of Norway’s leading winter sports destinations.

In the afternoon, there’s the opportunity to visit the Lillehammer Olympic Museum, which explores Olympic history from ancient times to the present day, with a strong focus on the 1994 Games through original artefacts, interactive exhibits and multimedia displays. Beginning the day in Lillehammer, we transfer to the Hemsedal valley for an unforgettable Arctic-style experience in the Norwegian mountains. We’ll enjoy husky sledding along snow-covered trails, travelling through beautiful mountain landscapes, forests and open terrain for a real sense of adventure and tranquillity. The Hemsedal Huskies are energetic, well-cared-for Alaskan huskies, known for their strength, friendliness and love of running. Before setting off, we’ll meet the huskies, learn how a dog team works, and receive an introduction to mushing and handling the sled or cart.

In the afternoon, we continue to Flåm, beautifully located at the inner end of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord. Surrounded by steep mountains, waterfalls and deep valleys, it’s known as one of Norway’s most dramatic fjord destinations.

Day Six: Riding the scenic Flåm Railway

After breakfast, we board the famous Flåm Railway, often regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys. The railway climbs 900 metres from the village of Flåm, deep in the Aurlandsfjord, to the mountain station of Myrdal. Along the way, the train winds through narrow valleys, past sheer cliffs, and alongside rushing rivers and waterfalls.

Highlights include views of deep gorges, traditional mountain farms clinging to the hillsides, and the impressive Kjosfossen waterfall, where the train often makes a short stop. With its steep gradient and ever-changing scenery, this journey is an unforgettable showcase of Norway’s wild and beautiful landscapes. At Myrdal, we continue by train to Bergen, travelling through some of Norway’s most spectacular scenery, from rolling hills and dense forests to tranquil lakes and dramatic mountain landscapes. On arrival in Bergen, we check in to our hotel, and the rest of the afternoon is free at leisure.

Day Seven: Bergen City Tour

Bergen is a lively coastal city, celebrated for its rich history, striking natural surroundings and vibrant cultural heritage. During our city tour, we’ll explore both modern landmarks and the old wooden town, wandering along broad streets and narrow alleyways. A highlight is Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 14th-century Hanseatic League, whose colourful wooden buildings, historic charm and winding passages make it one of Bergen’s most iconic sights.

We’ll also visit Bergen’s famous Fish Market, a lively city-centre spot where you can sample fresh seafood, local produce and traditional Norwegian specialities—an excellent way to experience the local culture and cuisine. The tour continues to Bergenhus Fortress, one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved fortifications, as well as St. Mary’s Church and the beautiful City Park.

Essential Information

Transfer time
From Oslo Airport to Oslo it is approximately 40 minutes. From Bergen to Bergen Airport it is approximately 25 minutes.
Currency
In Norway, they use the Norwegian Krone NOK.
Important information
A reasonable level of fitness is required for this tour as there will be a walking tour in Bergen and you will need to be able to get on and off trains with your luggage.
Dress code
The dress code for during the day is casual. In the evenings the dress code is smart casual. Comfortable warm shoes for walking and sightseeing are highly recommended. This time of the year the temperature doesn't get much above freezing, so be sure to bring layers that will keep you warm, with wool and insulating layers. Bring a comfortable coat, thick scarf, hat and gloves. Insulated boots and thermal tops are also a good idea.
Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. In order to give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. Your Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection to cover drivers, porters and hotel staff of 350 NOK per person.

Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate add on.
Passport, Visa & Entry Requirements

We recommend that you check passport and visa requirements for the country you are visiting at the State Department if you have a U.S. Passport. Most countries require that your passport have at least six months validity when traveling internationally, and many require that you have one to two blank visa pages for either an entry stamp or visa. As a general rule, please check that your passport has six months validity beyond your planned trip, and if not, please renew your passport with plenty of time to provide Solos with your updated passport information by the final payment due date.

Not sure what travel documents you need? Our trusted partner, sherpa°, makes it easy to check visa and entry requirements based on your destination and passport. One quick check now means smooth sailing later. Click here to learn more.

Health Requirements

We recommend that you check if vaccinations are required for your destination at the CDC’s recommendations for your visited destination(s). We also recommend you purchase travel protection. A travel protection plan can often assist with medical emergencies and reimburse costs that are covered by the plan. Please verify coverage details with Solos before you travel.

Flights & Airport Transfers

Whether you'd like us to arrange your flights or prefer to book your own, we're here to make the process easy. Our team can secure flights from the location that suits you best or provide all the arrival and departure details you'll need if booking independently.

Arrival & departure airport transfers are included for the majority of our trips EXCEPT our UK Breaks, regardless if you book your own flights or if we book them for you. To learn more about flight options, payments, and transfers, click here.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance before any trip — it safeguards you against unexpected issues like illness, cancellations, or lost luggage. It also protects your health and travel investment, giving you peace of mind to fully enjoy your journey. Click here to learn more.
