While in the historic centre, we’ll stop for a traditional panzerotto tasting, paired with a glass of local wine – the perfect way to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a little taste of Bari’s culinary culture. Take a leisurely stroll through the enchanting old town before sitting down to a traditional lunch inside one of these historic homes. We’ll then head to a nearby oil mill, where we learn how this liquid gold is produced and sample a variety of local oils. In the afternoon, we continue to Ostuni, known as the ‘White City’, where sunlit whitewashed buildings and a maze of narrow streets create a magical atmosphere. Enjoy a relaxed walk through its peaceful streets, take in breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and perhaps sip a refreshing drink at a local café before heading back to our hotel.

Day Four: Matera & Altamura

Today we travel inland to Matera, one of Italy’s most fascinating cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the “City of Stones,” Matera is famed for its ancient cave dwellings, rock-hewn churches, and underground cisterns, creating a landscape unlike anywhere else in the world. With our local guide, we’ll explore the Sassi districts and bring the city’s history to life — visiting the Palombaro Lungo, a vast underground reservoir and stepping inside a traditional cave home to see how families once lived.

Afterward, we continue to Altamura, a charming Puglian town renowned for its historic architecture and culinary delights. Stroll through the narrow streets of the old town and admire the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a 13th-century Romanesque gem commissioned by Emperor Frederick II. No visit is complete without tasting Pane di Altamura, the town’s famous durum wheat bread, baked in traditional wood-fired ovens, a perfect treat to savour before returning to your hotel.

Our guided tour will feature rare and climate-resistant fruits, historic Italian citrus species and one of the Mediterranean's most important fig collections.

In the afternoon, we visit Locorotondo one of the most beautiful towns in the Itria Valley. Perched on a hilltop, it offers stunning views of the surrounding olive groves and vineyards. Essential Information

Transfer
The transfer time from Bari Airport to our hotel in Bari is approximately 20 minutes. From our hotel in Vieste to Bari Aiport the transfer time is approximately 2.5hrs.
What to wear
For this trip, we recommend packing light, breathable clothing for warm days, along with comfortable walking shoes for cobbled streets and sightseeing. A sunhat, sunglasses, and a light scarf or shawl will come in handy for sunny afternoons and visiting churches. Evenings can be cooler, so bring a light jacket or cardigan, and perhaps something a little smarter for group dinners.
Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover transfer drivers, guides and hotel staff of €30 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % add on.
Health Requirements

We recommend that you check if vaccinations are required for your destination at the CDC’s recommendations for your visited destination(s). We also recommend you purchase travel protection. A travel protection plan can often assist with medical emergencies and reimburse costs that are covered by the plan. Please verify coverage details with Solos before you travel.

Passport & Visa Information

We recommend that you check passport and visa requirements for the country you are visiting at the State Department if you have a U.S. Passport. Most countries require that your passport have at least six months validity when traveling internationally, and many require that you have one to two blank visa pages for either an entry stamp or visa. As a general rule, please check that your passport has six months validity beyond your planned trip, and if not, please renew your passport with plenty of time to provide Solos with your updated passport information by the final payment due date.

Not sure what travel documents you need? Our trusted partner, sherpa°, makes it easy to check visa and entry requirements based on your destination and passport. One quick check now means smooth sailing later. Click here to learn more.

More to explore
There may be optional activities available to you during the course of your holiday, full details of which will be given out at your Information Meeting by the local guide. In fact, it is the Baroque that characterises portals, spires, columns and balconies, fascinating the visitor with chromatic effects and suggestions due to the use of a particular building material, Pietra Leccese, a golden stone, hard, but at the same time particularly malleable, that allows for results of great plasticity. Guided tour of the main monuments including the Church of Santa Croce, Piazza Sant'Oronzo, the centre and vital heart of the city, and Piazza Duomo, a unique and inimitable setting. Aperitif with rustico leccese and coffee leccese with pasticciotto.
