Singapore and Malaysia are warm, humid destinations, so lightweight, breathable clothing is the best choice for most days of the trip. Comfortable T-shirts, lightweight trousers, shorts, skirts and dresses are ideal for exploring, while comfortable walking shoes will be useful for our sightseeing days and heritage walks. We’ll be visiting cities, temples, gardens and historic neighbourhoods, so practical clothing that keeps you cool and comfortable will make the days much more enjoyable.
Some of our visits are to religious and cultural sites, including Batu Caves, Thean Hou Temple and Kek Lok Si Temple, where more modest clothing is appropriate. We recommend bringing lightweight trousers or longer skirts and tops that cover the shoulders, as well as a scarf or shawl that can be used for additional cover when needed. A comfortable pair of shoes with good grip will also be useful, particularly at Batu Caves.
There will also be plenty of opportunities to relax, including our stay on Pangkor Island, so don’t forget swimwear, sunglasses, a hat and plenty of sun protection. A light cardigan, jumper or shawl is worth packing too, as hotels, restaurants, coaches and other indoor spaces can be quite cool with air conditioning.
For our special experiences and evening meals, including High Tea at Raffles and our farewell dinner in Penang, smart-casual clothing is perfect. There’s no need to bring anything overly formal – just something that makes you feel comfortable and suitably dressed for a special evening.
Our packing essentials: lightweight breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, sun protection, a hat, a lightweight scarf or shawl and a light layer for air-conditioned spaces.
Compulsory vaccinations: None for travellers arriving from the UK. However, if you are arriving from, or have recently travelled through, a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, you may need a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate.
At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country-specific health advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website. Each country-specific page has information on vaccine recommendations, current health risks or outbreaks, and advice on staying healthy abroad.
General information on travel vaccinations and a travel health checklist is available on the NHS website.
Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever, Zika virus and chikungunya occur in Singapore. You should take appropriate precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
Singapore can experience periods of haze, particularly between June and October, caused by land and forest fires in Indonesia. Haze can affect air quality and may cause disruption to local and regional travel. Monitor the Singapore government's Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) and health advisories if travelling during this period.
Healthcare in Singapore is of a high standard but can be expensive, so you should have appropriate travel insurance covering medical treatment and possible repatriation.
Voltage: 230v
Frequency: 50Hz
Travel adaptor: Type G (UK-style 3-pin plug).
UK clients: Most UK appliances are compatible with Singapore's 230v supply and will only require a Type G adaptor if needed.
US clients: US appliances are generally designed for 120v, so a voltage converter/transformer may be required, as well as a suitable travel adaptor. Check the appliance label before use. Devices marked “100–240v, 50/60Hz” are suitable with the appropriate plug adaptor only.
Passport Validity
If you are visiting Malaysia, your passport should be valid for 6 months from the date you arrive. If it is not, you may be refused entry and detained. You may also be refused entry and detained if your passport has any damage or has pages missing.
Visas
British nationals do not need a visa to visit Malaysia. You will normally be given permission to stay for 3 months on arrival. Visas for longer stays or for non-tourist purposes must be obtained from the nearest Malaysian diplomatic mission before you travel.
Entry
You must fill in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card to enter Malaysia. You should complete this before you travel as it may be requested at check-in and/or arrival to Malaysia.
