Day Two: Lisbon City Tour

After breakfast, we begin our exploration of Lisbon with a guided walking tour through the storied districts of Baixa and Chiado. These historic and cosmopolitan neighbourhoods have long been gathering places for artists, writers and intellectuals, and remain the vibrant heart of the city. As we stroll through their grand streets and squares, we discover Lisbon's turbulent history—from the devastating 1755 earthquake and the city's ambitious reconstruction to Portugal's monarchy, revolution and cultural evolution.
After time at leisure for lunch, we continue to the historic district of Belém. Here, we explore Lisbon's most iconic landmarks—the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries—each one a testament to Portugal's extraordinary seafaring past and architectural legacy. It's a fitting end to a day spent deep in the heart of the city's history.

Today we enjoy a full-day excursion to the historic town of Sintra and the coastal resort of Cascais. We travel through the dramatic Sintra Mountains—a UNESCO-listed area renowned for its extraordinary landscapes and distinctive architecture. In Sintra, we stroll through the atmospheric historic centre, its cobbled streets and vibrant buildings alive with festive spirit. We visit the spectacular Pena Palace, a striking hilltop castle that showcases the bold, eclectic style of 19th-century Portuguese design.

There is time to soak up the atmosphere and perhaps sample Sintra's famous pastéis de nata before we continue along the stunning coastal road, passing the sweeping sands of Guincho beach before arriving in Cascais. We explore this stylish seaside town at our own pace, taking in its picturesque marina, independent shops and unhurried coastal character. Essential Information

Transfer Time
The transfer time from Porto Airport to your hotel is approximately 40 minutes.
Dress Code
For this Christmas city break in Lisbon, we recommend comfortable, layered clothing as the weather is mild during the day but cooler in the evenings. We should wear practical walking shoes for cobbled streets and sightseeing, with smart-casual outfits for included dinners and festive occasions. A light jacket or coat, along with a small umbrella, will ensure we are prepared for any change in weather while staying comfortable throughout the tour.
Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. To give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. The Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection at the beginning of your holiday to cover drivers, guides, porters and hotel staff of approximately EUR 20.00. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip.
Passport, Visa & Entry Requirements

To enter Portugal or Madeira your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

A visa is not required by holders of passports endorsed “British Citizen” for stays of upto 90 days in any 180-day period. Please note that stays in other EU countries counts towards this 90 day period.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct visa, a valid passport and any other travel documents for your holiday. All information provided relates to British citizens who hold or are entitled to apply for a British passport. For the most up-to-date visa information please visit; Portugal Foreign Advice

If you are not a British citizen and do not hold a British passport, you must make your own enquiries as to the applicable requirements.

From the 12th October 2025 the EU is introducing a new European Entry System (EES) that will be phased in and fully operational by the 10th April 2026. Non-EU nationals including British passport holders will now be required to complete biometric checks on arrival and exit to Schengen countries, which will include facial recognition and fingerprints. There is no cost for this, and no action needs to be taken prior to departure.

Health Requirements

Compulsory vaccinations: None.

All clients are responsible for acquainting themselves with up to date health information of the countries being visited and where necessary take the required precautions. We recommend that you check with your doctor prior to departure as this information can change. You can also visit the travel health website for more information; Travel Health Portugal

Important Information
A reasonable level of fitness/mobility is required as we include plenty of sightseeing/travelling. Itinerary is subject to change according to traffic, weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances beyond control.
