Day Two: Charming Villages of the Cotswolds

Day Two: Charming Villages of the Cotswolds

Step back in time as you explore the picturesque villages of the Cotswolds, where centuries of prosperity were built on the thriving wool trade. Between the 11th and 16th centuries, wool was England's most valuable export, bringing great wealth to the region and shaping the beautiful honey-coloured towns and villages you see today. Such was its importance that King Edward III decreed the Lord Chancellor should sit on the famous Woolsack in the House of Lords, a tradition that continues to this day.
Our journey begins in the idyllic village of Bourton-on-the-Water, often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds," before continuing to the historic market town of Stow-on-the-Wold, where we'll have time to enjoy lunch and explore its charming streets. The day concludes in the elegant village of Broadway, renowned for its beautiful High Street, independent boutiques, galleries, and traditional Cotswold charm.

Day Three: Cheltenham and Tewkesbury

Day Three: Cheltenham and Tewkesbury

We start our tour in Regency Cheltenham. Cheltenham developed as a spa town in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It was a popular retirement spot for the members of the East India company, who built grand houses in the latest style and spent their days taking the waters and enjoying the local social scene, which included gambling. It was said Cheltenham was the best place for a curry outside of India. A short walk around the main sites gives insight into the history of this Regency Resort.

Following lunch, we take the coach to Tewkesbury. The old town grew up around the imposing Abbey which dates back to the 1100s and the centre of Tewkesbury is a truly medieval town with half timbered houses built around a warren of courts and alleys. Tewkesbury is particularly well known for one of the most important battles of the War of the Roses, when Henry VI was defeated by Edward of the House of York. All will be revealed on a short walk of the centre.
