Day Three: Delights of Delhi

After a relaxed morning, our tour begins in Old Delhi, the former imperial capital of the Mughal Empire. We explore the vibrant Chandni Chowk market, a fascinating maze of narrow streets filled with colourful shops, spices, jewellery, textiles and local life. We then swap our vehicle for a cycle rickshaw and enjoy a memorable ride through the bustling lanes before visiting Jama Masjid, Shah Jahan’s magnificent 17th-century mosque, built from red sandstone and white marble. We continue to Raj Ghat, the peaceful memorial marking the site where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated in 1948. Our final visit is Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, one of Delhi’s most important Sikh temples. Here, we discover the tradition of Langar, the community kitchen where thousands of free vegetarian meals are prepared each day. We’ll have the opportunity to volunteer alongside the local community, helping to prepare food and, if we wish, joining them for a simple vegetarian lunch.

This afternoon, we visit Humayun’s Tomb, one of the finest examples of early Mughal architecture in India. Set within beautifully restored gardens, this magnificent 16th-century mausoleum is said to have inspired the design of the Taj Mahal. We continue to the Qutub Minar complex, home to a fascinating collection of historic monuments, including the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, one of the earliest mosques in India. We’ll admire the impressive Qutub Minar, a beautifully carved and fluted tower begun in 1199 by Qutb ud din Aibak and completed by his successors.

On our return to the hotel, we drive past some of New Delhi’s most famous landmarks, including Rajpath, the Secretariat buildings, Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhawan and India Gate, the striking memorial to Indian soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War.

Transfer Time

The transfer from Delhi International Airport to your hotel on arrival in Delhi is approximately 40 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. On departure, the journey from your hotel in New Delhi Aerocity to Delhi International Airport is approximately 5 minutes.

Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover guides, transfer drivers, and hotel staff of 7,700 INR per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % to add on.
Dress Code
The emphasis is on casual clothing for throughout. Go for light, loose cotton clothing and comfortable shoes or walking boots. Conservative dress is preferred for both men and women. No shorts or vest tops in restaurants. When visiting temples and certain museums dress politely; shorts, singlets, spaghetti straps, skirts, tank-tops and open backed sandals are not acceptable. The dress code would be same for men and women, that is shoulders and legs covered, no hats, and shoes to be taken off.
Health Requirements
All travellers should submit a self-declaration form on the online “Air Suvidha” portal before scheduled travel.

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country-specific health advice at TravelHealthPro (from the UK’s National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC). Each country-specific page has information on vaccine recommendations, any current health risks or outbreaks, and factsheets with information on staying healthy abroad. Guidance is also available from NHS (Scotland) on the FitForTravel website

General information on travel vaccinations and a travel health checklist is available on the NHS website. You may then wish to contact your health adviser or pharmacy for advice on other preventive measures and managing any pre-existing medical conditions while you’re abroad.
Currency
Indian rupee INR

Since the Rupee is a non-convertible currency, it cannot be taken out of India, so you won’t be able to obtain it before you travel. You can exchange money upon arrival at the airport, as well as at banks and major hotels. ATMs are also widely available, particularly in well-developed resort areas. While Visa and Mastercard are commonly accepted, it’s a good idea to check with your card provider about any fees for international transactions, as these can vary significantly and add up over the course of your trip.
WhatsApp Group
Shortly before your holiday, you will be invited to join an optional WhatsApp group to connect with your fellow travellers and your Tour Leader.
Booking Information
It is important to consider whether this holiday is suitable for your level of fitness, mobility, and any medical conditions. We are committed to making reasonable adjustments wherever possible. Please tell us about any disability, medical condition, or additional requirements before booking so we can assess whether we can safely and appropriately accommodate your needs. If you are unsure whether this holiday is suitable for you, please contact us before booking. We will be happy to discuss the holiday requirements and your individual circumstances.
