Day One: Arrive in Tenerife and transfer to La Gomera

Day One: Arrive in Tenerife and transfer to La Gomera

After landing in Tenerife South Airport, we transfer to Los Cristianos before traveling by ferry to San Sebastián de la Gomera. We will then be transfered to the quiet village of Chipude, where we stay for the first two nights.
La Gomera, the second smallest island of the Canaries, is also the least explored. Rising high above sea level, the island’s emerald peaks are home to one of Europe’s last remaining cloud forests. Add this to the island's lush valleys, awe-inspiring cliffs, glittering beaches and dramatic rock formations sculpted by centuries of volcanic activity, and you have a landscape that’s perfect to explore on foot. Unlike the typical tourist-resort feel of the Canary Islands, La Gomera has a distinctly adventurous atmosphere.

Day Two: Journey to the top of Alto de Garajonay (1.487m)

Day Two: Journey to the top of Alto de Garajonay (1.487m)

The first walk of the week takes us to the top of the island - the Alto de Garajonay. On clear days, we can enjoy fantastic panoramic views across the whole of Gomera and several neighboring islands. Descend to Igualero, the highest village in La Gomera, where stands the monument to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Silbo Gomero, the whistled language of Gomera.
We flank the magnificent Erques Barranco and pass near La Fortaleza, a massive volcanic mesa (flat-topped) formation used by the ancient Gomeros to pray to their gods. From here we return to our hotel in Chipude by foot.

Day Three: At leisure - Transfer to San Sebastian

After breakfast, we transfer to San Sebastián, on the east coast, our base for the next three nights. On the way, we stop at Garajonay National Park visitor centre in Juego de Bolas and we have time for a stroll in the town of Agulo before heading to the hotel. In the afternoon, explore the capital town, the charm of Torre del Conde park and La Asunción church, and relax by the seaside.

Day Four: Hiking in Garajonay National Park

Day Four: Hiking in Garajonay National Park

Today we enjoy a superb walk through the Laurisilva forest. Garajonay National Park has been awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site title for being the best-preserved primary forest of this kind on Earth. Many species of trees, plants and animals have found its home in this green paradise. Our local guide will introduce us to its botanical richness outlining the importance of running water while crossing the park from south to north following the stream of El Cedro, to the tiny hamlet of El Cedro, where we taste the local gastronomy.

The final part of the walk takes us to Reventón Oscuro. Transfer back to the hotel in San Sebastián.

Day Five: Benchijigua to Imada

Our last walk starts in the hamlet of Las Toscas. We descend through colorful vegetation, Canarian pine trees and palm trees to the pretty white cottages of Benchijigua. A short climb rewards us with stunning views of the Santiago ravine, towered over by the colossal Roque Agando, before we finish our walk in the hamlet of Imada.

Deep ravines are evidence of the erosion here after two million years without volcanic eruptions, while terraced fields colonize the steep slopes and goatbells ring in the distance. We transfer back to our hotel in San Sebastián ready to enjoy our last evening on La Gomera together.

Day Seven: Hiking the Teno

Day Seven: Hiking the Teno

Today we travel to the Teno Country Park, located in the north-west of the island and one of Tenerife’s most beautiful nature areas. Our hike takes us from the ridge of Baracan to the heart of Teno Alto, the most western village of the island. This area has kept much of its ecological, scenic and cultural wealth, largely thanks to its isolated position. Goat keeping and cheese production still remains part of the local economy.

Deep ravines, magnificent landscapes, countryside heritage, local gastronomy and lush laurel forests welcome us in the Teno mountains.

Day Eight: Anaga Biosphere Reserve

Day Eight: Anaga Biosphere Reserve

Nestled in the northeast of the island, the Anaga mountain range forms part of a protected biosphere reserve, where the preservation of its rich natural heritage goes hand in hand with the traditions of the local communities. From Cruz del Carmen, our trail enters the ancient laurel forest, descending through lush greenery into open landscapes dotted with hamlets. This unique balance between sustainable woodland use and the protection of one of the island’s most biodiverse regions is vital for the future of Anaga. As the forest gives way, the landscape reveals millions of years of erosion—exposing lava dykes, layers of volcanic rock, and offering sweeping views over the sculpted depths of old barrancos. For centuries, goat and sheep herders have traversed these steep slopes. Our path winds on toward the remote village of Chinamada.

This picturesque and remote village is the most popular troglodyte settlement in Tenerife. At a short distance, Mirador de Ahuaide rewards us with impressive views over marine cliffs and the coast, with our walk concluding in Las Carboneras.

Day Ten: Teide National Park

Day Ten: Teide National Park

For our final walk of the trip, we will enjoy Tenerife’s pièce de résistance - the jaw-dropping Teide National Park. 16 kilometres across the Caldera, it's filled with an abundance of colours and shapes following countless eruptions and lava flows. A must-see including the highest elevation in Spain, Mount Teide peaking at 3,715 metres(12,190 ft) above sea level and the famous symbol of the island. With the natural beauty of the landscapes and the volcanic richness, it's no wonder why the area is awarded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After hopping on and off the coach for several viewpoints, we then walk through the lava fields on the west of Las Cañadas, offering incredible views of Teide, Pico Viejo, the second highest volcano, and the west of the island with its lovely contrasting colours of the the black basaltic lavas, the blue sky, sea and the green of the pine forest.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fit and well enough to take part in your chosen activity holiday. If you are unsure as to whether the walks are within your capabilities, please contact the office to discuss this matter, thus making sure you appreciate the terrain that you will be walking. You could be walking across uneven ground in some areas and extreme care must be taken, especially if wet. If used to using a pole/stick, it is advisable to bring it. Please appreciate the route and content of the holiday may change at the time and at the discretion of the guide/organiser, should conditions require. Solo’s Holidays Ltd cannot be held responsible for personal injury, accident or damage to property whilst on these walks other than incidents arising out of the company’s negligence. The guide has the right to refuse to guide a walk with anyone not properly attired.

What to wear
It is of paramount importance that you have the correct footwear. It is essential to wear walking boots that are comfortable and preferably lightweight, with some ankle support and a good grip. If you already have a pair of boots that you are happy walking in (including during hot/wet weather and on hard ground), then bring these along. However, if you are bringing new footwear, do make sure they are well broken in before you arrive. Experience has shown that wearing 2 pairs of woollen socks adds to comfort. The weather on La Gomera and Tenerife, is unpredictable – particularly in mountainous areas. We would therefore recommend you travel with clothing suitable for all conditions, and suggest you use the following checklist as a guideline of what to take:

  • Walking boots with good ankle support
  • Waterproofs – jacket and trousers
  • Walking poles – recommended as they provide good support for the knees, particularly on downhill sections of walks and when conditions are wet/slippery
  • Lightweight trousers and shorts with pockets
  • Shirts or t-shirts for walking in
  • Walking socks – several pairs
  • Lightweight fleece or jumper
  • Hat & gloves
  • Daysack/rucksack for walking
  • Umbrella – it can be used also for protection from the sun as well as rain
  • Lightweight drinking bottle to carry water whilst walking
  • Small first aid kit – plasters, insect repellant, etc
  • Good, high factor sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses – the sun’s strength is often multiplied in mountainous areas.
Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover transfer drivers, and hotel staff of €40 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % to add on.
Passport & Visas

We recommend that you check passport and visa requirements for the country you are visiting at the State Department if you have a U.S. Passport. Most countries require that your passport have at least six months validity when traveling internationally, and many require that you have one to two blank visa pages for either an entry stamp or visa. As a general rule, please check that your passport has six months validity beyond your planned trip, and if not, please renew your passport with plenty of time to provide Solos with your updated passport information by the final payment due date.

Health Requirements

We recommend that you check if vaccinations are required for your destination at the CDC’s recommendations for your visited destination(s). We also recommend you purchase travel protection. A travel protection plan can often assist with medical emergencies and reimburse costs that are covered by the plan. Please verify coverage details with Solos before you travel.
