About this trip...
Our walking holidays in Andalucia offer a wonderful way to discover the region’s quieter, more authentic landscapes. This itinerary takes us into the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, in northern Huelva, where rolling hills, ancient oak and chestnut forests, river valleys and fragrant Mediterranean scrub create an idyllic setting for walking.
Along the way, we explore peaceful whitewashed villages, traditional dehesa landscapes and historic paths once used by muleteers and local traders. The countryside is closely connected to traditional rural life, with olive groves, orchards, chestnut woods and the famous oak pastures where Iberian pigs roam.
Our walks take us through some of the region’s most scenic landscapes, with opportunities to discover the villages of Galaroza, Alájar, Linares de la Sierra, Corteconcepción and Aracena, while learning about the area’s rich traditions, natural environment and renowned gastronomy.
With several guided walking days based in Galaroza and Aracena, this is an ideal way to experience the natural beauty and authentic character of inland Andalucia at a relaxed pace.

Setting off from our hotel in Galaroza, this circular walk takes in traditional trails and neighbouring rural landscapes. Some of the paths we follow have been used for centuries by muleteers and smugglers, offering a fascinating glimpse into the history and traditions of the Sierra de Aracena. The route passes through beautiful dehesa, the open oak woodland that is so characteristic of the region, as well as fragrant Mediterranean scrubland and peaceful waterways. Along the way, we encounter orchards close to the villages and traditional Iberian pig farms, where the animals forage beneath the ancient oak trees.
Together, these landscapes reveal the close relationship between the people, agriculture and natural environment of the Sierra, providing an authentic insight into the traditional rural economy and way of life of the area.

From here, we pass through the small village of Calabacino, known for its alternative, sustainable way of life, before continuing to Alájar, surrounded by olive groves and beautiful mountain scenery. As we climb towards the higher, north-facing slopes, the landscape changes to impressive chestnut forests, creating a striking contrast with the silvery-green olive trees and darker holm and cork oaks.
Continuing through orchards, oak woodland and fragrant Mediterranean scrub, we reach the charming whitewashed village of Linares de la Sierra, famous for its traditional circular wash house and historic agricultural heritage. From Linares, we continue on foot through the picturesque countryside to Aracena, where we arrive at our hotel for the next three nights.

Gruta de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders)
A visit to the Gruta de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders) includes access to the Ham Museum, Aracena Castle, and the Geological Museum.
The Gruta de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders) is the quintessential landmark of Aracena. Located right in the town center, the richness and variety of formations seen along its 1,200-meter route make it one of the most visited tourist caves in Spain, as well as a pioneer of this type of tourism in Europe. The first references to its discovery date back to 1850, resulting from mining operations, and it opened to the public in 1914.
The vast expanse of its lakes, the abundance and variety of formations, and the length of the cave system make this underground complex a place of great beauty and visual splendour.

Tinto Mines
Discover the extraordinary landscapes and fascinating 5,000-year mining heritage of the Riotinto region, where ancient traditions meet the striking red landscapes of the Tinto River. Our visit includes the Riotinto Mining Museum, where exhibits explore the evolution of mining, from Roman times to the present day, including a replica of a Roman mine. We’ll also visit the Peña de Hierro Mine, entering a historic underground gallery before reaching a viewpoint overlooking the dramatic open-pit mine and the source of the Tinto River.
A highlight is the Riotinto Mining Railway, where vintage carriages take us on a scenic 22-kilometre journey through the former mining landscape, following the distinctive red waters of the Tinto River. We’ll also visit House 21 in the Bella Vista English Quarter, a beautifully preserved Victorian home offering an insight into the lifestyle of the British mining community that once lived here.
Together, these experiences provide a fascinating insight into the history, industry and extraordinary landscapes that have shaped this unique corner of Andalucia.

Evenings on this trip are relaxed and informal. Comfortable holiday wear is perfect—think lightweight layers, casual clothing and shoes suitable for strolling around local villages or enjoying dinner. No formal wear is required.
We suggest a Group Collection to cover transfer drivers, and hotel staff of €30 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions.
For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % add on.
Whether you'd like us to arrange your flights or prefer to book your own, we're here to make the process easy. Our team can secure flights from the location that suits you best, or provide all the arrival and departure details you'll need if booking independently.
Shortly before your holiday, you will be invited to join an optional WhatsApp group to connect with your fellow travellers and your Tour Leader.
It is important that you have the correct footwear. It is essential to wear walking boots that are comfortable and preferably lightweight, with some ankle support and a good grip. If you already have a pair of boots that you are happy walking in (including during hot/wet weather and on hard ground), then bring these along. However, if you are bringing new footwear, do make sure they are well broken in before you arrive. The weather, even in summer, can be unpredictable. We would therefore recommend you travel with clothing suitable for all conditions, and suggest you use the following checklist as a guideline of what to take:
- Walking boots with good ankle support
- Waterproofs – jacket and trousers
- Walking poles – recommended as they provide good support for the knees, particularly on downhill sections of walks and when conditions are wet/slippery
- Lightweight trousers and shorts with pockets
- Shirts or t-shirts for walking in
- Walking socks – several pairs
- Lightweight fleece or jumper
- Hat & gloves
- Daysack/rucksack for walking
- Umbrella – it can be used also for protection from the sun as well as rain
- Lightweight drinking bottle to carry water whilst walking
- Small first aid kit – plasters, insect repellant, etc
- Good, high factor sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses – the sun’s strength is often multiplied in mountainous areas.
Guided walks are included as part of this trip. Your dedicated walking guide will brief you in resort on the daily walking programme.
The walking programme is graded by difficulty, and you can expect to walk varying distances with a range of ascents and descents. Some walks may be challenging, with uneven or rough terrain underfoot and sections at higher altitude. Please refer to the day-by-day itinerary for full details of each walk.
A good level of physical fitness is required to fully enjoy this trip.
It is important that you consider whether your chosen trip is suitable for your level of fitness, mobility and any medical conditions or additional needs. If you are unsure, please contact our team before booking. We will be happy to discuss the trip requirements and your individual circumstances to help you decide whether the trip is suitable for you.
We are committed to treating all customers fairly and will consider any reasonable adjustments where possible. Please let us know before booking if you have a disability, medical condition or any additional requirements that may affect your trip. This allows us to assess whether we can safely and appropriately accommodate your needs and to ensure you have the best possible trip experience.
Care should be taken at all times, particularly on uneven or wet terrain. If you normally use walking poles, we recommend bringing them with you. Sturdy walking boots or walking shoes are essential.
Please note that the route and content of the walking programme may need to change during the trip, at the discretion of the specialist walking guide or local organiser, if local conditions require.
If you have any concerns during your trip, please speak to your specialist walking guide or Solos Tour Leader.
